In the present situation in the world, values of tolerance, compassion and hospitality appear to be more contested. The debates among European leaders have come to center around how to "protect us" from refugees, rather than protecting the precarious lives of the refugees.The authors agree that we should not stop looking for practices of hospitality. We need to better understand what hospitality is, where it is practiced and also why it is practiced. Hospitality is not necessarily something we possess as an inner quality or as something disconnected from others. Rather it is practiced in specific ways in in particular spaces. The thesis is that we have to look for the characteristics of hospitality in "the other spaces" that Michel Foucault once called heterotopias.Five specific cases are analyzed: - a monastic garden for interreligious dialogue in Austria, a Lutheran congregation that accommodates a project for undocumented migrants in Western Sweden, a busy intersection in downtown Oslo where substance-users stay (and most others pass by), a voluntary organization that works for the creation of alternative life forms in inner city Copenhagen, and, finally, some aspects of the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York City.The authors are theologians, sociologists and a PhD candidate in diaconia, an illustration of the interdisciplinary composition of the book.
Heterotopia and Heritage Preservation
This book approaches the field of built heritage and its practices by employing the concept of heterotopia, established by the French philosopher Michel Foucault. The fundamental understandings of heritage, its evolution and practices all reveal intrinsic heterotopic features (the mirror function, its utopic drive, and its enclave-like nature). The book draws on previous interpretations of heterotopia and argues for a reading of heritage as heterotopia, considering various heritage mechanisms – heritage selection, conservation and protection practices, and heritage as mnemonic device – in this regard. Reworking the six heterotopic principles, an analysis grid is designed and applied to various built heritage spaces (vernacular, religious architecture, urban 19th century ensembles). Guided through this theoretical itinerary, the reader will rediscover the heterotopic lens as a minor, yet promising, Foucauldian device that allows for a better understanding of heritage and its everyday practices.

Adolescence is a phase of transition, change and upheaval. These processes are often translated into movements through space in literary representations. The narrated space is to be read in its construction and semantics as a complex symbol carrier that is able to connect different dimensions with one another. The study develops, with reference to cultural-scientific spatial theories, a methodical model to analyze current youth novels from a topographical perspective and thus to discuss the interweaving of space, movement and growing up. In the cultural studies and narratological view of (narrative) spaces of adolescence, new trends and developments in youth literature after 2000 manifest themselves. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Räume der Adoleszenz by Anna Stemmann, published by J.B. Metzler, part of Springer Nature in 2019.
