Excerpt from The Class-Book of Etymology: Designed to Promote Precision in the Use, and Facilitate the Acquisition of a Knowledge of the English Language As the standard of education in our country has advanced, greater precision in the use of language has marked this progress, and increased attention has been paid to the study of the etymology of our language. To meet the demand, on the part of teachers, for works adapted to instruct in this branch of education, several publications have issued from the press within the past few years. On the merits of these, the compiler of this work does not design to comment. Believing that there was room for improvement, he undertook the compilation of the class-book of Etymology, and now submits it to the examination of teachers.
