In a world shaped by language, our thoughts, perceptions, and interactions are inextricably linked to the words we use. This book embarks on a captivating journey into the realm of language and cognition, exploring the profound influence they exert on each other. Delving into the depths of linguistic relativity, we uncover the ways in which the structure of our language molds our perception of reality. From color perception to spatial cognition and time perception, we witness how language shapes our understanding of the world around us. Moving beyond perception, we delve into the intricate relationship between language and memory, examining how language influences our ability to encode, store, and retrieve information. We explore the role of bilingualism in memory and the impact of language disorders on cognitive processes. Furthermore, we investigate the role of language in problem-solving, creative thinking, and mathematical cognition. We uncover the linguistic strategies employed to solve complex problems and the impact of language on mathematical reasoning. The book also delves into the realm of emotion and social cognition, shedding light on the intricate interplay between language and our emotional experiences, social interactions, and cultural cognition. We examine how language shapes our perception of others, influences our social judgments, and mediates our cultural values and beliefs. In the digital age, we explore the transformative impact of technology on language and cognition. We examine the emergence of online communication, the influence of social media, and the development of artificial intelligence, considering their implications for language use, cognitive processes, and human-computer interaction. Throughout this comprehensive exploration, we draw upon the latest research findings from diverse fields, including linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. This interdisciplinary approach provides a holistic understanding of the complex relationship between language and cognition, offering valuable insights into the nature of human thought and communication. Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
Release Date: 2024-08-22
This volume looks at the preparation of future critical language teachers in the face of an increasingly multilingual and transcultural contemporary world. This is seen through the lens of the collapse of Nation-State borders that crumble in the face of migration and the intense flow of languages that comes with it. It brings together international research that problematizes, theorizes, re-positions and re-conceptualizes myriad structural, systemic, ideological, political and pedagogical issues that intersect with the possibilities and impossibilities of the development of language teachers' agency. The volume examines the needs of linguistically diverse student populations and considers the socio-cultural and socio-political barriers that interfere with the exercise of teacher agency for social justice in language classrooms. It offers a theoretical and empirical overview of how language teacher education has addressed multilingualism and transculturalism in critical approaches in many complex countries in their diversity and/or postcolonial history, including Brazil, Qazaqstan, Scotland, and Thailand.
Language Across Boundaries

Language across Boundaries is a selection of papers from the millennium conference of the British Association of Applied Linguistics. The thirteen papers are written by applied linguists, from Britain, mainland Europe, the USA, Australia and Singapore, working in a variety of sub-disciplines of the field. The 'boundaries' of the title have been widely interpreted and the book reflects a spectrum of research, ranging from work on the linguistic repercussions of individual and group identity boundaries to work dealing with ways of crossing national and cultural boundaries through language learning and language mediation in the form of translation. Included in the volumes are the plenary papers given by Jennifer Coates, well known for her work on language and gender, on the expression of alternative masculinities; and by Bencie Woll, holder of the first chair of Sign Language and Deaf Studies in the UK, on the insights to be gained from sign language in exploring language, culture and identity.
