From Paint Splatters to Classroom Matters: Early Childhood Educators' Perspectives on Visual Arts Integration, Its Impact on Gender Differences, and Academic Achievements in Early Childhood Students

The study explored educators’ experiences with early childhood students based on their gender while engaging in visual arts education. The study focused on academic achievement, cognitive gender differences, sensory-based and perception-based gender differences, social-emotional benefits of visual arts participation, gender stereotyping, and gender disparities in education. Research has shown that gender differences are significant in understanding how children learn in core academic areas and arts education. The use of the qualitative methodology focused on a phenomenological approach in this study. The population for the current research included 15 female educators with 3-40 years of experience teaching and integrating a visual arts curriculum with early childhood learners. The findings of the research study revealed the following themes: Theme 1. Participants’ descriptions of planning visual arts in the early childhood curriculum, Theme 2. Participants’ integration of visual arts in the early childhood curriculum, Theme 3. Participants’ concerns when planning visual arts for early childhood students, Theme 4. Participants’ opinions regarding the belief that including visual arts in the curriculum influences gender differences in early childhood students, Theme 5. Challenges participants have experienced while teaching early childhood students visual arts, and Theme 6. Participants’ beliefs that including visual arts in early childhood curricula influences academic achievement in early childhood students. The findings of the study demonstrated that many early childhood educators were aware of some gender differences when visual arts integration occurred. However, several early childhood educators tried not to focus on gender because they did not want to be biased against one gender or stereotype children based on gender.
