The great twentieth-century dichotomy that has pervaded moral philosophy and value theory on the one hand and social science and social theory on the other, concerns this volume. Part one approaches this dichotomy between fact (knowledge/science) and value (worth/morality) from different angles. It opens with a general study of the way value and fact are construed, then locates where scientific materials enter into ethics. Part two deals with issues of moral attitude and practical responsibility in the work of science and technology. Scientists' social responsibility as a function of changing social roles of science, and knowledge and responsibility in the professions are examined. In the concluding chapter Edel examines the dichotomy between fact and value as a social and an ideational phenomenon.

The answer to philosophical questions will often depend on the position one takes regarding the fact-value problem. It is, therefore, not surprising that, in the tradition of western philosophy, the past 200 years or so record an animated discussion of it. In the present collection the debate is continued by representatives of various "schools" in contemporary western thought. A number of philosophers from non-western cultures, too, enter into it. The contributions do not all reflect on the same theme, nor do they use the same approach. Essays written by philosophers sympathetic to the analytical tradition are followed by reflections on the part of those inspired by phe nomenology. A third group of contributions is by non-western thinkers, who are more likely to approach the problem in terms of culture. Their engage ment with the issue clearly shows, among other things, that it is almost exclusively in the western tradition that the fact-value distinction is often understood as an outright dichotomy. The occasion for the publication of this collection is Dr. Cornelis Anthonie van Peursen's retirement as Professor of Philosophy. This year he leaves the Free University, Amsterdam; until 1982 he was professor at the University of Leyden as well. In the Netherlands and beyond he has become known for his concern with constructive comparison of diverging philosophical trends and the cross-cultural fertilization of thought. Characteristic of his career are his efforts to render the results of academic philosophizing understand able to a broader audience.
Exploring Values
Philosophy studies all reality, all things, and all beings. Philosophy, in general, raises questions everything real. Yet, it always asks about one of the aspects of reality, which becomes our focus of exploration. Philosophy, however, is always “philosophy of” something special, like philosophy of man, philosophy of value, philosophy of nature, and others. This book is concerned with values. It is about philosophy of value, or axiology. What is value? The human life always relates to values. What we hope for as well as what we believe in mostly connect with our values, although we also face physical matters in life. Do we truly pursue the abstract things in life? How do we know we have values? Are values forever related to the good and the sacred? What about the bad, the evil, and the ugly? This book explores the world of values through various axiological standpoints, debates, the problems of values in human life, factual and evaluative judgments, the structure of human values, issues of values in culture, and close personal relationships. This book, finally, motivates us to identify, discover or rediscover our core values by formulating personal axiological perspectives.
