This book bridges the gap between the theory of scientific application development and the theory and practice of application deployment over distributed systems. It addresses this imbalance by surveying a broad range of distributed applications and understanding their main characteristics; reviewing successful systems, tools, and middleware that provide support for specific patterns; and identifying and solving primary causes of difficulty in developing and using applications in distributed systems. The book offers an integrated, coherent approach for researchers in applied distributed systems and computational science, post-graduate students, and industry practitioners.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th IFIP WG 6.1 International Conference on Distributed Applications and Interoperable Systems, DAIS 2009, held in Lisbon, Portugal, in June 2009. The DAIS conference was held as part of the federated event on Distributed Computing Techniques (DisCoTec), together with the 11th International Conference on Coordination Models and Languages (Coordination 2009) and the IFIP WG 6.1 International Conference on Formal Techniques for Distributed Systems (FMOODS/FORTE 2009). The 12 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 32 submissions. The papers address service orientation, quality of service and service contract, business processes, Web services, service components, algorithms and protocols supporting dependability, fault tolerance, data replication, group communication, adaptive and collaborative systems, context awareness, model-driven development, middleware for ubiquitous computing and sensor networks, ad hoc network protocols, peer-to-peer systems, and overlays. They are organized in topical sections peer-to-peer networks, adhoc networks, dependability, and infrastructure and services.

Distribution and interoperability in heterogeneous computing environments are the key requirements for state-of-the-art information processing systems. Distributed applications are making a critical contribution in many application sectors, such as office automation, finance, manufacturing, telecommunications, aerospace, and transportation. Users demand support for the construction, integration and management of their application systems as well as for the interoperability of independent application components. DAIS '97 provides a forum for researchers, application designers and users to review, discuss and learn about new approaches and concepts in the fields of distributed applications. DAIS '97 will especially focus on the interoperability between different applications and services, different implementations of the same and of different distributed platforms.
