A wireless approach for the purpose of stress and temperature measurement in Lithium Batteries has been proposed in this thesis using Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors. Initially, the charging and discharging behavior of the battery has been studied and its State of Charge versus Voltage characteristics are observed. The development of critical issues such as temperature and stress are addressed, and its various causes analyzed. The temperature increase in Lithium battery is measured using a Thermocouple. Also a similar analysis of strain is done using a strain gage and torque meter. These results serve as reference for comparing the final results from SAW sensor. A Lithium Niobate SAW sensor is manufactured in the UCCS cleanroom and its characterization is also carried out. Characteristics of Lithium Niobate SAW sensor and Quartz are compared to determine which sensor is suitable for temperature measurement and which one is suitable for Strain measurements. These sensors are then mounted on the Lithium Battery and the corresponding strain and temperature changes are observed using the approach of resonator SAW sensing. The results are analyzed and compared with the results of Thermocouple and Strain Gage measurements.
