When Fear Is Not an Option
Fear is the driving component to either move you forward or to stop you in your tracks. The choice is always yours; you can turn around and run away or you can move toward that which you fear. Failure is an option; fear is not. When you turn from the wall of fear and go back to your comfort zone, life still goes on, but you miss out on everything that is on the other side of the wall-all the opportunities that may come from going through the wall and struggling past your fear. Fear is not an indicator that you are doing the wrong things, that you don't have talent, education, or that you are in the wrong place. Many times in life you can be on the right path, pursuing your dreams, but you are scared to death.
Dying Is Not an Option
Life’s inconveniences can often lead to seasons of discouragement that can linger for what seems like an eternity. Perhaps you have experienced challenges that were the result of a broken relationship, an unexpected health diagnosis, the loss of a loved one, financial hardship, or other issues that were totally out of your control. Whatever the case, the truth is that unexpected things happen. People get stuck and become discouraged, and life changes as a result. Try as we may to be positive or to exercise mountain-moving faith, some circumstances shake us to the core, and life as we once knew it is never the same again. In the book, I will share with you some of the most trying storms that I have faced as a mother, woman, and cancer survivor. I am convinced that with every unexpected twist and turn life throws at us, we become more resilient. It is my hope that despite the life altering events you have encountered thus far, you will find the courage to see your life through a new set of lenses and thrive. You must believe that you too are a survivor and dying is not an option!
Death Is Not an Option: a View from a Free Medical Clinic
Bette Grey understands the plight of the uninsured. She has walked in the shoes of those she now helps to get healthcare. She believes the life events that triggered this journey were actually blessings in disguise to not only others but for her as well. She credits God with the nudges to begin the project. No matter what direction her life took, she always was brought back to the idea for a free clinic. While recuperating from a vital surgery, she thought about those with the same issues who had no access to care other than through the local emergency room. And then she really thought about those who might refuse to go. She knew they would ultimately end up in the emergency room as a necessity, nearing death. She credits the ABC news program, 20/20 and the segment featuring Jon BonJovi. The performer was dedicating many dollars to a local free clinic in his community. The free clinic in Red Bank followed the Volunteers in Medicine clinic model. Bette innocently decided to explore the internet to fi nd out about this type of clinic. She had no intentions of doing anything further but she believes God had other plans. Fast forward with many meetings under her belt, she was able to open the fi fty-fi rst Volunteers in Medicine clinic. As she looks back, she believes the lives saved are incredible, more than she ever thought. She really thought the clinic would be more for acute illness rather than the chronic diseases the clinic have treated. Never did she expect the seriousness of the diagnoses that would lead to the deaths of everyday folks.
