Visual and Performing Arts Framework
Two approaches to teaching dance, drama/theatre, music, and the visual arts are interwoven into a comprehensive whole in the framework described in this document. The first approach views arts instruction as direct student involvement in the expressive modes of the arts. The second approach views the arts as a means of acquiring cultural literacy. The framework is constructed on these two complementary approaches, which are expressed in four components of arts education: aesthetic perception; creative expression; arts heritage; and aesthetic valuing. The framework is organized to assist curriculum planners design an arts curriculum that has a triple thrust that: (1) develops the unique characteristics of each of the arts; (2) interrelates the arts; and (3) infuses the arts into the general curriculum. Chapter 1 addresses the commonalities among the arts; chapters 2 through 5 present the unique aspects of each discipline. The individual discipline sections follow similar formats to assist teachers and curriculum developers build a balanced curriculum that includes all four areas of the arts. Chapter 6 provides a guide for interrelating the arts and for integrating the arts into the total learning process. The concluding chapter articulates what is needed to develop an adequate program for the arts. (JB)

This framework is designed to help classroom teachers and other educators develop curriculum and instruction in the arts so that all students will meet or exceed the content standards in dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts. In chapter 1, the framework presents guiding principles for instruction in dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts. The following chapter guides the planning, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive, standards-based visual and performing arts education programs. Chapter 3 presents the key content standards for kindergarten through grade 8 that provide a beginning point for standards-based instruction; the complete content standards in dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts for kindergarten through grade 8; and the content standards for the beginning or proficient level and advanced level for grades 9 through 12. Chapter 4 guides curriculum development for comprehensive, standards-based visual and performing arts education programs. Information on the purpose and forms of assessment in the arts is provided in chapter 5. This is followed by a chapter presenting details on teacher preparation and professional development for each arts discipline. Finally, criteria for the evaluation of instructional materials in the arts for kindergarten through grade eight is provided in the closing chapter. The framework also includes a glossary of terms and an extensive list of selected references and resources. Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools
The arts convey knowledge and meaning not learned through the study of other subjects. Study of the arts employs a form of thinking and a way of understanding based on human judgment, invention, and imagination. This publication represents a strong consensus on the skills, knowledge, and abilities in dance, music, theater, and visual arts that all students should be able to master at each grade levels, pre-kindergarten through grade twelve, in California public schools. The standards were built on the components of arts education contained in the "Visual and Performing Arts Framework for California," which was adopted in 1996. The strands and standards in this publication describe the content that students need to master by the end of each grade level or cluster of grades (grades 9 through 12 at the proficient and advanced levels). For each arts discipline the content standards are grouped under five visual and performing arts strands: artistic perception; creative expression; historical and cultural context; aesthetic valuing; and connections, relations, and applications. At each grade level, pre-kindergarten through grade eight, content standards are specified for each strand. For students in grades 9 through 12, the proficient level of achievement can be attained at the end of one year of high school study within an arts discipline after the student has attained the achievement level required of all students in grade eight. The publication is organized according to the four arts disciplines: dance, music, theater, and visual arts. A glossary of key terms is provided at the end of the standards for each of the arts. (BT)
