In 2019, a people’s revolution ended the thirty-year reign of Sudan’s military president Umar al-Bashir. A transitional government took power, led by esteemed international economist Abdalla Hamdok and promising a return to civilian rule. But Sudan’s new government quickly imposed a shock therapy programme of cuts, privatisations and devaluation, following the diktat of foreign lenders. In 2021, as Sudan grew poorer, the army seized on popular discontent to launch a coup, burying hopes for a democratic transition. But why did Sudan’s first civilian government in more than a quarter-century bend to the will of creditors at this crucial moment in the country’s history? The answer lies in an unwieldy and unpayable debt burden that has long constricted Sudanese politics and society. Undoing a Revolution narrates the history of sovereign debt in Sudan from independence to the present, revealing the innovative policies adopted by Sudanese governments to manage their place in the global economy. But it also shows how external actors have leveraged the power of debt to impose their will and wreak havoc. With Sudan embroiled in civil war since 2023, Harry Cross explores the political implications of sovereign debt for states and societies across Africa, and around the world.

Analyzing the impact of BRICS+ nations' trade policies on global economies offers valuable insights into the shifting dynamics of international trade and economic power. As the original BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) expands to include additional emerging economies, their influence on global markets continues to grow. These nations have implemented trade policies that challenge traditional economic structures and offer new opportunities for growth. Understanding the strategies and initiatives of BRICS+ nations, such as trade liberalization, regional integration, and investments in infrastructure, is crucial for assessing how their policies affect global trade flows, supply chains, and geopolitical relationships. Further analysis may provide a clearer picture of how these policies shape the global economic landscape and offer both risks and rewards for developed and developing countries alike. Analyzing the Impact of BRICS+ Nations' Trade Policies on Global Economies delves into the complex dynamics of currency policies among the BRICS+ nations and their impact on trade and economic integration. It examines how differences in monetary policies, exchange rate regimes, and economic priorities among these nations can create challenges and opportunities for both intra-BRICS trade and global economic integration. This book covers topics such as income inequality, geopolitics, and global business, and is a useful resource for economists, business owners, policy makers, government officials, academicians, and researchers.

The revival of major world power rivalry is a striking feature of the current international affairs. In the year gone by, Europe, supported by the US, vied with Russia for influence in Ukraine–a race that led to the annexation of Crimea by Russia and a pro-Russian insurgency in that region. In Asia, while the US is gradually drawing down in Afghanistan, it is also seeking to counter the growing influence of China. The sole Super Power is garnering support from China’s neighbours, India included, to balance the resurgent Dragon. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of ISIS has disturbed the world peace. The progress made in the negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme is likely to affect calculations and equations all over the world. No region is impervious to the happenings in another part of the world. Competition (read rivalries) and geopolitical shifts pose myriad challenges to the peace-loving nations of the world–quite often, they are faced with the difficulty of evading armed conflicts. It requires conscious and sustained effort to do so. In order to work towards such goals, it is necessary to look at geopolitical, security and military-related issues objectively. The Centre for Air Power Studies has been publishing the Asian Defence Review to fulfill this need. This volume, a resource base for both the professional and the general readers, is the eighth in the series under this title. It aims to add to the pool of information and knowledge in the current strategic discourse dealing with military strategy, defence, politics and trends in military capabilities that impact Asia. In particular, it covers some of the important issues related to Air Power, Tactical Nuclear Weapons, Cyber Security, Network-Centric Warfare, Environmental Degradation, Iran, Pakistan and China.
