Digital objects that change over time present a challenge to established modes of preservation because change itself is a key way that such objects have profound meanings in our lives. By better understanding the sensemaking power of stories and everyday information habits, we can imagine new ways of preserving changing digital objects that respect their dynamism and reflect their roles in our experiences. In this dissertation I explore how we engage with digital objects that change over time, using a case study of digital games that receive regular patches, in order to consider how better to preserve such objects. I inspect the information ecosystem around the longrunning multiplayer digital game League of Legends as a productive space where questions of identity, change, and habit intersect and spawn rich discussions among members of the community. I rely on a multithreaded approach integrating reading of Patch Notes Documents and narrative analysis of interviews to support my research. The Patch Notes Documents circulated by the developers of League of Legends describe a complex narrative reality that grants coherence to wide-ranging sets of software changes of all types and scales. The interviews reveal some of the rich, idiosyncratic relationships that players have with the game over time and embed these relationships in their information habits. My main contributions are: • Introducing the term “dynamic Complex Digital Object” as a distinct subset of Complex Digital Objects. • Identifying a typology of changes to a digital game that includes “tinkering” changes. • Unpacking stories as public and private sensemaking activities in information behavior. • Suggesting a new kind of preservation that integrates existing approaches with solicited narratives from individuals close to the information artifacts we preserve

The Wiley Blackwell Companion to Religion and Materiality provides a thoughtfully organized, inclusive, and vibrant project of the multiple ways in which religion and materiality intersect. The contributions explore the way that religion is shaped by, and has shaped, the material world, embedding beliefs, doctrines, and texts into social and cultural contexts of production, circulation, and consumption. The Companion not only contains scholarly essays but has an accompanying website to demonstrate the work of performers, architects, and expressive artists, ranging from musicians and dancers to religious practitioners. These examples offer specific illustrations of the interplay of religion and materiality in everyday life. The project is organized from a comparative perspective, highlighting examples and case studies from traditions originating in both East and West. To summarize, the volume: Brings together the leading figures, theories and ideas in the field in a systematic and comprehensive way Offers an interdisciplinary approach drawing together religious studies, anthropology, archaeology, history, sociology, geography, the cognitive sciences, ecology, and media studies Takes a comparative perspective, covering all the major faith traditions
