A variety of decibel drop techniques are currently in use for ultrasonic sizing of flaws in welds during the periodic inspection of Canadian nuclear power plants. Due to the diversity of techniques and their application, the accuracy and repeatability of using these techniques in sizing flaws has been questioned. A study was sponsored into the relative merits of each technique. As an extension to that program, this report used the techniques developed to perform a similar study of the type of flaws expected to develop during service (i.e. fatigue cracks).
