Phillip Hubbart, a defense lawyer for Pitts and Lee for more than 10 years, examines the crime, the trial, and the appeals with both a keen legal perspective and an awareness of the endemic racism that pervaded the case and obstructed justice. Hubbart discusses how the case against Pitts and Lee was based entirely on confessions obtained from the defendants and an alleged “eyewitness” through prolonged, violent interrogations and how local authorities repeatedly rejected later evidence pointing to the real killer, a white man well known to the Port St. Joe police. The book follows the case’s tortuous route through the Florida courts to the defendants’ eventual exoneration in 1975 by the Florida governor and cabinet. From Death Row to Freedom is a thorough chronicle of deep prejudice in the courts and brutality at the hands of police during the civil rights era of the 1960s. Hubbart argues that the Pitts-Lee case is a piece of American history that must be remembered, along with other similar incidents, in order for the country to make any progress toward racial reconciliation today. Multi-Layered Transcription
This book is designed as a course in the phonetic transcription of normal and disordered speech. What differentiates this book from existing approaches to phonetic transcription and conversational analysis is that it concentrates on linking together layers of detail to result in a complete record for the entire range of transcribable behaviors. Müller's book represents the first attempt to amalgamate differing methods to give phoneticians and clinicians a transcriptional tool kit, thus allowing them to generate a rich description of their data. This approach results in a variety of layers of transcription, all or some of which are available to the clinician or researcher faced with the task of transcribing speech. The layers include a base, orthographic layer; segmental and suprasegmental phonetic layers; a gaze and gesture layer; a layer for marking aspects of discourse (e.g., overlap); and finally, a layer for highlighting behaviors of specific clinical interest (e.g., stuttering behavior). This book clearly lays out the various layers of transcription in this approach, illustrating them with normal and clinical data as well as exercises for the reader. Each chapter in the book addresses a different layer of transcription, with a final chapter illustrating how to bring the layers together. Worked examples accompany each chapter, and appendices provide a quick reference to symbols and transcription conventions. Clinicians who need to transcribe speech samples for diagnosing disorders, planning treatment, and measuring treatment efficacy milestones will value that added precision available from use of the upgraded transcription techniques elucidated in this book.
Secret Science
From the early 1990s, allegations that servicemen had been duped into taking part in trials with toxic agents at top-secret Allied research facilities throughout the twentieth century featured with ever greater frequency in the media. In Britain, a whole army of over 21,000 soldiers had participated in secret experiments between 1939 and 1989. Some remembered their stay as harmless, but there were many for whom the experience had been all but pleasant, sometimes harmful, and in isolated cases deadly. Secret Science traces, for the first time, the history of chemical and biological weapons research by the former Allied powers, particularly in Britain, the United States, and Canada. It charts the ethical trajectory and culture of military science, from its initial development in response to Germany's first use of chemical weapons in the First World War to the ongoing attempts by the international community to ban these types of weapons once and for all. It asks whether Allied and especially British warfare trials were ethical, safe, and justified within the prevailing conditions and values of the time. By doing so, it helps to explain the complex dynamics in top-secret Allied research establishments: the desire and ability of the chemical and biological warfare corps, largely comprised of military officials, scientists, and expert civil servants, to construct and identify a never-ending stream of national security threats which served as flexible justification strategies for the allocation of enormous resources to conducting experimental research with some of the most deadly agents known to man. Secret Science offers a nuanced, non-judgemental analysis of the contributions made by servicemen, scientists, and civil servants to military research in Britain and elsewhere, not as passive, helpless victims 'without voices', or as laboratory and desk perpetrators 'without a conscience', but as history's actors and agents of their own destiny. As such it also makes an important contribution to the burgeoning literature on the history and culture of memory.
