Changing sustainable consumption patterns and the drivers behind them is crucial to achieving the goal of sustainable development established at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. This report by the OECD Environment Directorate assesses the challenges involved and the contribution that OECD countries can make, both at home and internationally. It contains an analysis of household consumption patterns in food, tourism-related travel, energy, water and waste generation. The report finds that the impact on the environment from household activities has worsened over the past 30 years and this trend is projected to continue during the next two decades, particularly in the areas of energy, transport and waste unless comprehensive policies are implemented to promote more sustainable consumption.
