Pevsner: The Complete Broadcast Talks
This book brings together the surviving texts of the 113 talks on art and architecture that we know of, given by the art historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner on radio and television between 1945--1977. It includes the seven texts of the 1955 Reith Lectures in their original broadcast form, as well as lectures that Pevsner gave in German (for the BBC in London and RIAS in Berlin) and on the radio in New Zealand. These talks are important as an example of the attempt by the BBC in particular to provide intellectual programming for the mass population. The talks are important for what they reveal about changing tastes in the treatment of the arts as a broadcast topic, as well as offering a case study of the development of one particular historian's approach to a subject that was gaining ground in universities as a direct result of his popularisation of it. They show what topics were thought to be central to the artistic agenda in the mid-years of the last century, whether from an academic or journalistic perspective, and reveal the mode and manner of academic engagement with the public over the period. Forty-six of these talks were published in 2002, on the centenary of Pevsner's birth, in a trade edition. At the time, his reputation as an active force in architectural thinking had long been eclipsed and interest in him had waned. Since then, there has been a turn-around in tastes and Pevsner's role within his chosen field is now being actively studied and discussed by a new generation for whom he is central to an understanding of the 20th century. There is therefore a real need for this book. In addition to containing twice the number of talks as the previous volume, it is supplemented with explanatory introductions, footnotes and citations. Pilgrimage Into God
Pilgrimage into God: A Study of John Main's Meditation-Oriented Spirituality is a comprehensive investigation of the heritage of the Benedictine monk John Main (1926 - 1982). This founder of a worldwide movement for Christian meditation understands meditation as an intentional transcending of all mental processes. Contrary to popular opinion, which associates meditation uniquely with Eastern traditions, Main considers meditative practice to be essential and central to Christian faith. This study not only explores Main's views on practise, but also looks into his theology, his understanding of spiritual growth and the (ideal) contexts for achieving such growth. It does this by critically situating Main's spiritual teaching within the Christian tradition and exploring its relation to Charles Taylor's interpretation of the modern spiritual condition. This study also aims at exploring how Main's heritage may contribute to illuminating Christian spiritual life today.
Talks by Harry
Eruch Jessawalla, one of Baba’s intimate mandali, would tell Harry stories about Baba in the early days and they would discuss various spiritual topics that Harry would record on his tape recorder. During Harry’s lifetime he would use the material from these conversations to give his public talks on Meher Baba. Meher Baba encouraged Harry to begin speaking about Him to the Baba group in New York City, called the Monday Night Group and later at the Society for Avatar Meher Baba’s office on Saturday nights. Then in 1967, Baba gave Harry an order to give two public programs to celebrate Baba’s birthday and silence day each year. At these events Harry would give a talk. Eruch actually requested Harry in 1970, in Meherazad, to publish his experiences, because Eruch felt Harry had a deep understanding of Baba’s life and work because of his intimacy with the God-Man, both as His doctor and mandali. Meher Baba on different occasions called Harry Kenmore one of His most intimate mandali, His apostle, His dear son and a chip off the Ole Block. The themes and concepts in each talk were all developed through Harry’s understanding and elaboration that reflected the conversations he had with Baba and the mandali, his intense study of Baba’s principles and precepts in the books he read, spiritual themes discussed by Baba and stories told in mandali hall.
