The Three Lives of the Kaiser

Franz Beckenbauer – known as ‘the Kaiser’ – was Germany's greatest-ever footballer and one of the game's biggest icons of all time, a World Cup winner as player and manager. But what is often described as a blessed life was in fact a rollercoaster ride with stunning highs and bitter lows. He rose to fame at the 1966 World Cup in England, where after West Germany’s final defeat the British press marvelled at the grace of a ‘beaten but proud Prussian officer’. Yet there was nothing Prussian about the Bavarian boy who flouted authority, disregarded rules and viewed the traditional German work ethic with the disdain of someone to whom everything comes naturally. After a glittering early career at Bayern Munich – captaining them to three European Cup victories and pioneering the playmaking libero role in central defence – Beckenbauer made a controversial move to the recently formed New York Cosmos in 1977. Praised as ‘the greatest’ by none other than Muhammad Ali, he gently warded off overtures from Rudolf Nureyev and partied the night away with Mick Jagger and Grace Jones at Studio 54. Back home, though, people often wondered what to make of this most famous German athlete who was so un-German. Beckenbauer’s country had finally learned to love him by the time he managed the national side to World Cup glory in 1990, but allegations of corruption surrounding Germany’s successful bid to host the 2006 World Cup made him a controversial figure all over again. In The Three Lives of the Kaiser, leading football writer Uli Hesse gives us the definitive biography of this truly remarkable legend.
The Three Lives of Charles De Gaulle

Author: David Schoenbrun

Publisher: Plunkett Lake Press
Release Date: 2024-11-03
“[O]ne of the best introductions in English to this awkward and impressive figure which constantly reminds us that men of destiny make difficult company... an honest and enjoyable book.” — Political Science Quarterly “David Schoenbrun wrote his book from the vantage-point of frequent personal contacts with de Gaulle and many years residence in France. He blends biography and history, equally concerned with his protagonist’s mind and character as with the sequence of events, in this well-balanced account of de Gaulle the Soldier, the Savior of France, and the Statesman. Schoenbrun finds much to admire in the soldier, but he grows more critical as the Messianic de Gaulle rises or climbs to the dizzy heights of the Presidency which thanks to de Gaulle’s Constitution now has more power than the king who proclaimed "l’état c’est moi"... this enthralling book is well worth reading.” — World Affairs “David Schoenbrun is a top CBS newsman and analyst with an impressive accessibility to the great and knowledge of politics, in particular French politics... he applies his experience and qualifications to the task of presenting formidable Charles de Gaulle of France. It is a full dress biography.”
Radicalised by FIFA

Author: Jean Williams
language: en
Publisher: Fair Play Publishing
Release Date: 2025-07-03
What do a childhood on a remote farm, a career in academia, and the corrupt underbelly of global football have in common? In Radicalised by FIFA – Football, History and Feminism, Professor Jean Williams weaves them together with sharp humour and political bite. Part memoir, part cultural critique, Radicalised by FIFA explores how a love of football—and outrage at its inequalities—sparked a lifelong campaign for justice both on and off the pitch. From muddy grassroots fields to the politics of the Women’s World Cup, Jean exposes the systemic barriers facing women in sport and in life. With themes of gender, power, institutional hypocrisy, and the personal toll of pushing against entrenched systems, Radicalised by FIFA is essential reading for anyone who believes in the transformative potential of sport—and the need to reform it. The memoir also covers the impact of global events like the SARS and COVID pandemics and September 11, alongside the rise of social media and the fight for equal pay in women's football.
