The Sensitivity of Linear Control Systems to Pole and Zero Variations

The sensitivity coefficients derived in the synthesis of linear control systems are applied to optimisation in time and frequency domains and to worst case and statistical tolerance procedures. Both first and second order theory is considered. The sensitivity of the response of linear systems to pole and zero variations is derived and computer subroutines are developed for efficient optimisation to be carried out simultaneously with any or all frequency and transient responses. The relationship between time and frequency domains and the compromise obtained between non-equivalent responses in the two domains is investigated. The second order corrections to the sensitivity coefficients are derived and minimisation for least sensitivity within prescribed response limits in investigated. Both first and second order sensitivity coefficients are used to synthesise worst case limits and Gaussian distributions to the values of poles and zeros for prescribed response errors or distributions. Correlation between the system parameters is also considered the distributions obtained are also related to the transfer function polynomial coefficients for use in some realisation procedures. The first product of this research is an optimisation program which will take the first approximation to the transfer function and produce a corrected transfer function with a detailed investigation of the errors permitted in the function parameters. Further work is desirable to extend this program forward to realisation and backward to initial approximation, and analysis.
Linear Control System Analysis and Design with MATLAB

This book uses numerous in-depth explanations, diagrams, calculations, and tables to provide an intensive overview of modern control theory and control system design. Mathematics is kept to a minimum, and engineering applications are stressed throughout. Completely updated and packed with student-friendly features, the sixth edition presents a range of updated examples using MATLAB, as well as an appendix listing MATLAB functions for optimizing control system analysis and design. Over 75 percent of the problems presented in the previous edition have been revised or replaced.
