The Canadian Commonwealth

Agnes Christina Laut's 'The Canadian Commonwealth' stands as a panoramic exploration of the sociopolitical and cultural underpinnings of Canada during its pivotal moments of nation-building. Crafted with an engaging prose that offers both clarity and depth, this book transcends the simplicity of historical retelling. Instead, it provides a thorough examination, adept at weaving the past with the contemporary issues of Laut's time, situating the text within both the regional literary tradition and the broader context of Commonwealth literature. Laut's commitment to detailed research and accessible narrative makes her exploration of the Canadian soul an intellectually stimulating experience, one that reflects the zeitgeist of the early 20th century and the country's trajectory towards self-identification and autonomy within the British Empire. In this special edition, DigiCat Publishing honors the book's historical significance, ensuring its legacy endures in both print and digital forms for a new generation of readers and scholars. Agnes Christina Laut, a prolific historian and an esteemed author of her time, was deeply influenced by the burgeoning sense of Canadian nationalism and the rapid changes enveloping the early 1900s. As a passionate observer and recorder of the Canadian landscape, both physical and political, her insights were shaped by the transformation she witnessed firsthand. Her dedication to dissecting the myriad threads that composed Canada's identity, from indigenous cultures to European settlements, and her efforts to cast light on the complexities of territorial and economic expansion, are distinguished feats that underpin this work. Such a scholarly background positions Laut as a critical voice in the literary depiction of Canadian history and development. 'The Canadian Commonwealth' is recommended for readers with a penchant for historical analysis and those interested in the intricate social tapestry that underlies a nation's growth. The modern reader will find Laut's work to be a bridge between the historical past and contemporary discussions of national identity, making it a valuable addition to any literary repertoire. With DigiCat's meticulous reproduction, the essence of Laut's original work is preserved, giving enthusiasts of historical literature and Canadian studies the opportunity to engage with her enduring narrative and its primary themes of cultural evolution and political maturation.

Canadian Content

A nation is given shape in large part through the cultural activities of its builders. Historically, nationalists have turned to the arts and media to articulate and institute a sense of unique national identity. This was certainly true of Canada in the twentieth century. Canadian Content explores ways in which nationhood was defined and pursued through cultural means in Canada throughout the last century. As a framework for the study, Ryan Edwardson distinguishes between three phases of Canadianization: support for the arts and cultured mass media during the colony-to-nation transition; the 'new nationalist' empowerment of multi-brow culture and the call for state intervention in the mid-1960s and 1970s; and the 'cultural industrialism' initiated by the federal government under Pierre Trudeau in 1968. Examining each phase in its turn, Canadian Content looks at Canada as an ongoing postcolonial process of not one but a series of radically different nationhoods, each with its own valued but tentative set of cultural criteria for orchestrating and implementing a Canadian national experience. Considering the relationship between culture and national identity, this study offers an idea of what it means to be Canadian, and suggests just how adaptable, problematic, and ongoing the pursuit of nationhood can be.
