There seems to be no question that emotional states of mind manifest themselves in behavior. The posture, gestures, facial expression, and voice, all contribute to the pattern which is called emotional behavior. Aside from the usual manifestations or emotional behavior in everyday life, various forms of realistic art, such as sculpture, painting, and music, do a successful job of reproducing emotions in an expressive manner. But, in the investigation of emotional behavior, it is necessary to know the extent to which each of the above mentioned factors, the posture, gestures, facial expression and voice, contribute to emotional behavior, and the extent to which each of these factors taken separately may indicate the presence of a specific emotional state of mind. It is the purpose of this investigation to attempt to determine the extent to which the voice may convey specific emotions.

This book provides an overview of theoretical thinking about the communicative scope of emotional expressions as well as an overview of the state of the art research in emotional psychology. For many years, research in emotional psychology has been primarily concerned with the labeling of emotion expressions and the link between emotion expressions and the expresser’s internal state. Following recent trends in research devoting specific attention to the social signal value of emotions, contributors emphasize the nature of emotion expressions as information about the person and the situation, including the social norms and standards relevant to the situation. Focusing on the role of emotion expressions as communicative acts, this timely book seeks to advance a line of theoretical thinking that goes beyond the view of emotion expressions as symptoms of an intrapersonal phenomenon to focus on their interpersonal function. The Social Nature of Emotion Expression will be of interest to researchers in emotional psychology, as well as specialists in nonverbal behavior, communication, linguistics, ethology and ethnography.

This fully updated seventh edition takes an experiential approach to listening instruction, providing extensive applied examples and cases within the context of the HURIER listening model. This textbook encourages students to view listening as a process involving six interrelated components which are developed along the parallel dimensions of theory and skill building. This new edition includes additional and updated cases, exercises, and questions for discussion to address students’ world of evolving technology, expanding social boundaries, and global communication challenges. A new challenge, integrative listening, addresses students’ social responsibility as effective listeners and suggests that they apply their skills to create strong listening environments characterized by respectful and inclusive dialogue. Students move from self-reflection and self-knowledge through skill development and personal applications to creating listening environments that facilitate productive conversation and collaboration. Cases in “the bigger picture” address issues such as the opioid crisis, fake news, artificial intelligence, and teenagers’ mental health. Listening serves as a core textbook for courses in listening, communication studies, communication skills, interpersonal communication, management, human resources, and education.
