A father sees his children and friends sitting outside their inner-city apartment sad because they have nothing to do. The dad wants to play basketball with his friends. But should he play basketball with his friends or do something to make the children happy? He decides trying to make the children happy is more important than playing basketball. So he packs up everyone in his minibus and starts off to the park. The sky gets dark, it starts to rain, lightning cracks across the sky, and the wind is blowing hard. The minibus gets a flat tire, and the children are sad again. Then he drives the minibus down a winding road with trees’ branches hanging into the road, attacking the minibus. The children’s friend Kim falls and gets a bruised knee. Everyone is hungry and thirsty. Dad and Mom pull out a gill, hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, chips, and drinks. But Fara cannot eat hot dogs because of her culture. For that, Dad has banana fritters just for her. Dad does whatever is needed to make sure the children have fun, and he feels good. He puts a smile on the children’s faces, and they have quality family time. They ride back home singing, “That’s my dad—he’s a hero!”

A young child starts off this laugh-out-loud picture book by listing all the ways his dad is NOT a superhero: he can't leap tall buildings, run faster than a speeding bullet, or shoot webs out of his wrists. Each spread illustrates how Dad doesn't have super powers but is still a hero at heart. The sweet ending depicts all the cool—if not super—activities Dad does do with the child, like throwing a baseball, playing checkers and going toy shopping. Ethan Long's spot-on artwork perfectly accompanies this super funny and super sweet story. Praise for Ethan Long: "A nicely illustrated tale that speaks volumes about the bond between a dad and his son...a great story that will be perfect as a gift for any dad or son." —The New York Journal of Books
