Obwohl die Bezüge auf die Architektur in der Literatur vielfältig sind, werden sie erst seit kurzem systematisch betrachtet. Germanistische, romanistische und anglistische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaftler sowie Kunsthistoriker haben bei einer Freiburger Tagung neue Perspektiven erprobt und Fallstudien präsentiert, aus denen die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes hervorgingen. Sie konzentrieren sich auf Texte und Kontexte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, die Zeit, in der eine enorme Präsenz der Architektur in der Literatur und komplexe ästhetische Interdependenzen zwischen beiden Künsten festzustellen sind – nicht zuletzt weil die Stilfrage im Zuge des architektonischen Historismus und seiner Überwindung neue Bedeutung erhielt und der Raum sich als eine zentrale Kategorie in der ästhetischen Theorie etablierte. Untersucht wird, wie in der europäischen Literatur der Moderne Architekturen thematisiert und repräsentiert werden, welche Funktion ihrer Beschreibung und Imagination für den jeweiligen Text, für seine Form, Struktur und Ästhetik sowie für den Prozess der Narration zukommt.
Neubau Atmospheres
The artistic potential modern, urban housing (“Neubau”) offered to writers and directors in East Germany from the 1960s to 1980s remains underexplored. Neubau Atmospheres seeks to bridge that gap by providing an incisive analysis of East German cinematic, literary, and architectural case studies, highlighting how the modernist housing of the GDR provided a potent vehicle for mediating the emotional and social experience of its denizens. Considering how these cinematic and literary representations focalized ideas of class, gender, and age, author Stephan Ehrig makes a compelling case for viewing this engagement with the urban environment as a cultural genre in its own right.
Beyond Media Borders, Volume 2
This open access book promotes the idea that all media types are multimodal and that comparing media types, through an intermedial lens, necessarily involves analysing these multimodal traits. The collection includes a series of interconnected articles that illustrate and clarify how the concepts developed in Elleström’s influential article The Modalities of Media: A Model for Understanding Intermedial Relations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) can be used for methodical investigation and interpretation of media traits and media interrelations. The authors work with a wide range of old and new media types that are traditionally investigated through limited, media-specific concepts. The publication is a significant contribution to interdisciplinary research, advancing the frontiers of conceptual as well as practical understanding of media interrelations. This is the second of two volumes. It contains a concluding article by Elleström and seven contributions concentrated on the issue of media transformations: how media characteristics are transferred and transfigured among various media products and media types.
