Halima Bashir was born into the remote western deserts of Sudan. She grew up in a wonderfully rich environment and later went on to study medicine. At the age of twenty-four she returned to her tribe and began practising as their first ever qualified doctor. But then a dark cloud descended upon her people... Janjaweed Arab militias began savagely assaulting her people. At first, Halima tried not to get involved. But in January 2004 they attacked people in her village. Halima treated the traumatised victims and was sickened by what she saw. She decided to speak out in a Sudanese newspaper and to the UN charities. Then the secret police came for her. For days Halima was interrogated and subjected to unspeakable torture. She finally escaped but the nightmare just seemed to follow her... This inspiring story tells of one woman's determination to survive and her passion to defend her people. For the first time, we can truly understand the personal horrors of Darfur from someone who lived through it.

On March 3, 1871, Congress established the United States Centennial Commission, charged with “an International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine.” Philadelphia was chosen as the site of the Centennial Exhibition. On June 5, 1874, President Grant extended invitations to the governments of the world to participate in the Exhibition. All thirty-nine nations accepted. This was a six-month international event, running from May 1876 to November 1876. The Centennial Exhibition attracted over ten million visitors. It was a showcase of American ingenuity and inventions. Typewriters, telephones, and steam pistons as well as art were displayed. The invited countries displayed their own national products and art. The Turkey delegation brought its crown jewels. While City Council argued about final funding for City Hall, the population and visitors celebrated. American women could not vote. Discrimination and persecution against African Americans was prevalent. Regardless, people met, fell in love, and committed crimes.

Are you interested in Christian service or studying for the Christian ministry? This book is uniquely designed to help you prepare for the challenges ahead and is endorsed by a pastor who served his church for thirty-eight years and the presidents of two seminaries who will recommend it to their students. Karl Hellers new book, Tears in the Desert: Lessons from the Joys and Sorrows of Gods Call, provides an up-close and personal account from the frontline of pastoral ministry. This is a refreshingly candid account of why pastoral ministry is so very challenging and at the same time so very important. By recounting the triumphs and tragedies of his own ministry, Dr. Heller is an able and wise guide, especially for seminarians preparing for pastoral ministry. Frank A. James III, DPhil, PhD, President and Professor of Historical Theology, Biblical Theological Seminary, Philadelphia
