Everything within this book is true. This book is about a momentous weather project that almost took over my teens. The topic of this project is the eye of the storm. I wrote about the updrafts of thunderclouds, the vortex in tornadoes, the wrath of lightning and the eye of hurricanes. I couldn’t get enough of nature’s fury. My fascination began in the Seventies with a small weather station in the porch. But in the early Eighties, my weather projects got bigger and bigger. I kept diaries, wrote stories, poems and filled sketchbooks with artwork. In reality, I was running away from something horrible. Without my realisation, the weather was ‘whispering’ a message to me. Decades later, this message would get through. It destroyed everything I believed in. This book lays bare my findings.

Everything within this book is true. This book is about my fact-based projects. From early childhood, I wrote about the world, nature and science. Once upon a time, I wanted to write about everything. A few times, my projects floundered. But they wouldn’t stop. Before long, I’d be writing about something else, reading a deluge of fascinating facts about the Earth. I did quizzes about flowers, space, airmasses and extremes. Before long, I’d set myself up a little weather station, for the sky would become my biggest passion. In fact, I was running away from something horrible. Without my realisation, every page of my projects was shining a light into a murky corner of my head. This book looks at sixteen projects, from the human being to wildflowers. Touched upon is my children’s stories, artwork, novels, and poems. I kept a detailed diary, which has been used as part of my research. Something is fuelling my projects. At the age of fifty-one, this fuel would reveal itself. This book lays bare my findings.

The following story is true. This book is about my novel, The Lessons. At the age of nineteen, I made the momentous decision to pen this novel – on 23 April 1985 to be precise. I know this because I kept a diary. As soon as I began, an illness cut me down for a week. I thought nothing of it, determined to begin this novel as soon as I felt better. Little did I realise how this novel would affect my life. I kept it secret from family and friends. I feverishly read books about writing novels, sitting at my flat for hours, eking out a few sentences. During episodes, I would lose weight and become ill. My novel appeared to have no bearing upon my life at all. A psychopath operates in a creepy old house called the Hollows. I was living in a sleepy village with my parents and siblings. I did guileless things like babysitting, writing, toymaking and art. During my writing, I connected with this strand. This strand grew addictive. It ran deep, powerful, compulsive, deathly, creepy, and devastating. Thirty years after beginning this novel, I would uncover the source of this strand. Illustrations and excerpts from my diaries are included.
