Nell'ospedale militare di Val de Gross, a Parigi, è ricoverata Taji al-Mulik, una donna di novant'anni con una vita tumultuosa alle spalle. Nonostante si sia stabilita a Parigi da tempo, la sua mente è sempre rivolta alla sua vita passata trascorsa a Baghdad, un periodo di cui conserva gelosamente i ricordi. Negli anni Quaranta Taji era una donna colta, bella e sicura di sé, una brillante giornalista abituata a muoversi nella migliore società irachena. Frequentava circoli di artisti liberali e feste diplomatiche, personalità di spicco del governo e gruppi comunisti. Dopo aver preso parte alle proteste anticoloniali, Taji è costretta a lasciare l'Iraq. Dopo un lungo viaggio tra Iran e Pakistan dove lavora come annunciatrice radiofonica, conosce il palestinese Mansour. Tra di loro nasce un amore che nessuno dei due è in grado di confessare. Conclude infine il suo peregrinare a Parigi, dove decide di stabilirsi. Lì l'incontro con Widyan, un'altra giovane compatriota in fuga, farà riaffiorare i ricordi di una vita intera.

These experiences force her to question all her values.
