Switched Reluctance Generator for Wind Power Applications

The Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) has received significant industry attention over the past few decades. It is economical, reliable, and easy to control, due to the recent boom in the electronics market. Its unique characteristics give it numerous advantages over conventional electric machines when functioning as both generators and motors. The SRM can operate as a motor or generator, depending on the settings fixed on the controller. The controller determines the operations mode of the SRM. Advances in Power Electronics have made it relatively straightforward to implement the requirements of the SRM controller while meeting design goals. This study embraces the advantages of the Switched Reluctance Generator (SRG) in respect to PM machines and AC machines, the controller design for the self excitation mode of a SRG and the determinations of the variable parameters in a SRG controller. Various engineering simulation software packages were used to establish the design parameters for the SRG controller. Results for the controller design are presented. Recommendations on how to improve the efficiency of the switched reluctance machine, and make it more suitable as a power source, will also be provided.
