The icon of the female protester and her alter-ego, the female superhero, fills screens in the news, in theaters, and in digital spaces. The female protester who is Muslim, though, has been subject to a legacy of discrimination. Superheroes in the Streets: Muslim Women Activists and Protest in the Digital Age follows the stories of both famous and grassroots Muslim female protestors, bringing careful attention to protest modes and online national icons. US Muslim women have long navigated public and digital spaces aware of the complex and nuanced histories that trail them. Given the pervasive influence of mainstream feminism, Muslim women activists are often made out to be damsels in distress. Even when mass media turns its attention to the activism of Muslim women, persistence of these false narratives demeans their culture and hypersexualizes their bodies. Following the stories of US Muslim women activists, author Kimberly Wedeven Segall shows how they have been reinventing the streets and remaking racialized codifications. Segall highlights their creativity in crafting protest media of posters, rap rally songs, and digital images of superheroes, carving public spaces into inclusive and digital territories. Each chapter teases apart the complexities of public banners and digital activism.

Howard, Johnny Jones, Riggs Morales, Spenser Nellis, Patrick A. Reed, Michael Sales, Daniel Silver, Matthew Teutsch, Stephen J. Tyson Jr., george white jr., and Laith Zuraikat Hip-Hop and Comics is a groundbreaking volume that explores the deep and dynamic intersections between two of the most influential cultural movements of the past fifty years. Edited by Sheena C. Howard, Justin D Burton, and Brea M. Heidelberg, this book provides an in-depth examination of the artistic, historical, and cultural relationships between hip-hop and comics. Both art forms evolved into global phenomena, shaping storytelling, identity, and social commentary in profound ways. Through a collection of insightful chapters, this volume critically analyzes how hip-hop and comics have influenced each other, from early underground movements to their present-day impact on mainstream culture. Structured in three thematic sections—Artistic Innovation and Resistance; Marvel Comics and Hip-Hop; and Cultural Expression, Impact, and Identity—this book investigates key historical moments, artistic influences, and the creative exchange between these two mediums. It also examines the visual aesthetics of hip-hop as reflected in comic book art, the role of graffiti as a bridge between these worlds, and the ways in which hip-hop narratives and identities have been expressed through superhero and underground comics. With contributions from leading voices in hip-hop studies, comics scholarship, and media analysis, this is a pioneering text that bridges academic and popular audiences. By bringing together historical research, critical analysis, and firsthand accounts, Hip-Hop and Comics cements its place as a definitive exploration of the powerful synergy between these two art forms.
