When we think of the pulse in cinema, we may think of the heartbeat of the spectator as they respond to affective or moving scenes in the film, or how fast-paced and shocking images exacerbate this affective response. Conceptually extending cinema spectatorship, The Pulse in Cinema contends that cinema is an energetic arrangement of affective and intense forces, where the image and the spectator are specific components. Analysing body horror films such as The Tingler (1959), Dawn of the Dead (1978) and The Beyond (1981), this book builds on Lyotard's concept of the dispositif, Deleuze's work on sensation and Bataille's economic theory to conceptualise a pulse in cinema, arguing for its importance in cinema spectatorship theory.

This edited collection attempts to revive a unified anthropological approach to the study of sex and gender hierarchies. Seventeen distinguished contributors - from cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, archaeology, and anthropological linguistics - have produced a wealth of fascinating data on human and primate, ancient and contemporary, and 'primitive' and developed societies, covering topics such as mothering and child care, work, health, intrafamily relationships, and public power. The interdisciplinary approach successfully contributes to the development of better theory and methodology in anthropology.

This anthology contains lectures from the first Queer Astrology Conference held in July 2013 at the California Institute for Integral Studies in San Francisco. Astrologers, activists, and members of the queer community gathered to discuss the intersection between astrological practice, queer culture, and gender theory. Gathered here are voices bringing these topics into the light. From the Saturn Return of AIDS to the development of an Earth-based eco-sexuality, these members of the astrological community seek to spark dialogue in order to open the door to more awareness in both astrological circles and the world at large.
