Screens and Illusionism explores the effects of illusionism as foundational to contemporary acts of perception and aesthetics. Our point of departure is the acknowledgement that our sensory perception is fundamentally subject to mediation, through a class of objects, techniques, and technologies. We emphasize mediation to consider the loss of optical certainty, and explore illusionism within the register of the uncanny. The volume is divided into three sections: Screens as Perceptual Vehicles (Part I), Mediation and its Avatars (Part II), and Alternative Teleologies of Media (Part III). Overall, the collection resonates with contemporary discussions of screen culture, media materiality and intermediality. It explores an array of pre- and post-cinematic devices and spectacular entertainments, forging links between "e;old"e; and "e;new"e; media, and across media formats.

The Matrix: Technology, Illusion, and the Question of What Is Real is a comprehensive exploration of the Wachowskis’ groundbreaking film, examining its philosophical, technological, and cultural dimensions. Far more than a cinematic review, this book delves into the intricate layers of the Matrix universe, analyzing how simulation, control, identity, and belief shape both the fictional world and our understanding of reality. Through ten detailed parts, the book investigates key themes such as the architecture of simulated environments, the ethics of choice and prophecy, the interplay between mind and body, and the mechanisms of power and resistance. It also addresses the film’s enduring legacy, its influence on digital culture, and its relevance to contemporary debates on technology, virtuality, and media literacy. Accessible yet scholarly, the book is enriched with a glossary of terms, references to philosophical and media theory, and guidance for further reading. It offers readers a lens for reflecting on their own mediated experiences, asking enduring questions: What is real? Who defines it? How do we navigate a world shaped by unseen systems? Ideal for students, scholars, and thoughtful cinephiles, this book invites readers to go beyond the spectacle of The Matrix and engage with its profound inquiry into the nature of reality, freedom, and human agency.

Since the very first days of cinema, audiences have marveled at the special effects imagery presented on movie screens. While long relegated to the margins of film studies, special effects have recently become the object of a burgeoning field of scholarship. With the emergence of a digital cinema, and the development of computerized visual effects, film theorists and historians have been reconsidering the traditional accounts of cinematic representation, recognising the important role of special effects. Understood as a constituent part of the cinema, special effects are a major technical but also aesthetic component of filmmaking and an important part of the experience for the audience. In this volume, new directions are charted for the exploration of this indispensable aspect of the cinematic experience. Each of the essays in this collection offers new insight into the theoretical and historical study of special effects. The contributors address the many aspects of special effects, from a variety of perspectives, considering them as a conceptual problem, recounting the history of specific special effects techniques, and analysing notable effects films.
