Sample Scattering Corrections in Neutron Beam Experiments

Calculations were made of the effects of single and multiple neutron scattering in a disk of sample material. These effects increase the effective thickness of the sample relative to the geometric thickness in the direction of the incident neutrons and must be considered in a large class of neutron measurements, e.g., cross section measurements in which the total number of reactions in a sample is measured. The integrals, taking account of exponential attenuation, were evaluated for neutron beams incident along the axis of the disk. Results are given analytically and graphically. (auth).
