Excerpt from Rapid Field-Sketching and Reconnaissance It must be remembered that a sketch is generally made for the information of some person who has not yet seen the ground in question, hence the only real test of its value is its capability of conveying a true impression of the portion of ground it represents to others. I would wish, therefore, to start on the subject of rapid field-sketching, either mounted or on foot, with the following assumption, namely, that in order really to attain great facility in this line, and to produce useful sketches against time, it is an enormous advantage to have a natural taste for freehand drawing, and that the man with this talent will, ninety-nine times out of a hundred, distance the man whose only knowledge of using his pencil is derived from studying military surveying. Now this taste for freehand drawing need not be a very deve 10ped one, but the more developed it is, the better and easier will a man when engaged in military sketching draw the detail which he wishes to place on record.
