Railway transportation refers to the conveyance of passengers or the transfer of goods by means of trains that are designed to run along railroads or railways. Tracks, or railroads, guide the directional motion of rail vehicles. Since these offer lower frictional resistance, they can facilitate passage to longer trains. Most tracks are built with a signalling system which offers safe transit of vehicles. Rail gauge can be standard gauge, broad gauge or narrow gauge. In addition, the tracks are laid in conformation with a loading gauge that determines the maximum height, width and load of a railway vehicle for safe passage through tunnels, bridges and other structures. All vehicles operating on a rail network have gears that are compatible with the track gauge. The different forms of railway locomotives include steam locomotives, electric locomotives, diesel locomotives and high-speed rails. Regardless of whether a train is steam-propelled or electrically-propelled, the propulsion may be provided by individual motors in self-propelled multiple units or by a separate locomotive. This book presents the complex subject of railway transportation in the most comprehensible and easy to understand language. Different approaches, evaluations, methodologies and advanced studies on railway transportation have been included herein. This book will help new researchers by foregrounding their knowledge in this domain.

Covers various facets of rail transport and its development starting from its origin upto the present stage of bullet trains and surveys, design and construction of new lines including route planning and standards. The book covers in detail the different characteristics of the railways' infrastructure. Coverage includes in detail all their maintenance requirements. As a special feature, it includes the basics of different systems of train operation, their planning, implementation, and monitoring, including the safety aspects and disaster management. It briefly covers the different forms of administration of a railway system and its finances including details of modernization on railways, metro rail planning and construction and high speed railways.
Railway Transportation Systems and Engineering
Railways transportation is the means of transfer of passengers and goods using railway systems. It is the safest mode of transit. A railways system is a complex form of engineering. Each system has two major components- the rolling stock or locomotives, and the rail tracks along with their supporting structures and ancillary buildings. Railway signalling is an essential aspect of railway transportation. Railway transportation engineering is responsible for the design, construction and operation of rail transport systems. It encompasses the design and implementation of train control systems, railway systems engineering, control and railway engineering, etc. Efficient railway transportation ensures the continuation of functional supply chain and population mobility. Railway reliability is threatened by an aging infrastructure, security threats, increasing freight costs and inadequate capacity, research in railways transportation systems and engineering is most pertinent in today's scenario. The objective of this book is to give a general view of the different railway transportation systems, and their engineering. It covers in detail some existing theories and innovative concepts revolving around railway transportation. This book is a resource guide for experts as well as students.
