Although Brazilian scholars have collected and studied folklore since the second half of the nineteenth century, their work has gone largely unnoticed by folklorists working in other parts of the world. With the exception of anthropologists who occasionally study the folk literature of indigenous peoples in Brazil, few foreigners are familiar with, or even aware of, the kinds of folklore studies that have been undertaken in that country. This work, first published in 1994, aims to characterize the nature of Brazilian narrative studies and trends; to discuss and assess the roots of the apparent preoccupations, approaches and objectives of traditional narrative scholarship in Brazil; to examine Brazilian folklore scholarship in light of Euro-American research; and to point out the results and accomplishments of Brazilian research while simultaneously indicating possibilities for new directions in research.

A lenda surge a partir de um fato, histórico ou social, ou de uma personagem real. A imaginação popular e a memória coletiva darão um novo colorido ao evento. A lenda, portanto, tem origem na história e corre paralela a esta. O presente livro reconta em setilhas de cordel cinco das mais belas lendas do folclore capixaba. Essas narrativas tratam de amores impossíveis, milagres e explicam como surgiram algumas das mais belas paisagens do Espírito Santo. No monumental Dicionário do Folclore Brasileiro, Câmara Cascudo define lenda como "episódio heroico ou sentimental com o elemento maravilhoso ou sobre-humano, transmitido e conservado na tradição oral popular, localizável no espaço e no tempo". No Brasil, lendas de procedência e influência variadas formam um conjunto nem sempre harmonioso, mas de inegável beleza. De norte a sul, histórias de heróis, locais assombrados, metamorfoses punitivas, tesouros enterrados, aparições de santos etc. formam um painel complexo que, desde o século XIX, tem chamado a atenção dos nossos estudiosos.
