Netnografi bukan hanya berkenaan participation observation, tetapi juga menelusuri aktivitas media sosial, communication, serta connection yang muncul secara online di antara mereka. Netnografi ingin menelisik konteks yang lebih dalam pada makna (meaning than on precision), yaitu makna yang sebenarnya dari balik konteks mengapa sesuatu terjadi di dunia maya. Misalnya, seseorang melakukan posting di sosial media, komunikasi yang terjadi, interaksi, aktivitas dan semua pergerakan yang ada di dunia internet. Bukan hanya misal berapa kali sebuah theme atau posting atau hastag berdampak pada isu yang berkembang kemudian, tetapi lebih penting lagi adalah Siapa (Who) dan Mengapa (How) terlebih pada “the whole story”.

Namun netnografi digunakan sebagai metodologi, sehingga sangat tergantung dengan cara pandang terhadap realitas, diri, ilmu, bahkan Tuhan.
