Narrative Space, Narrative Time a Spatiotemporal Medel of Narrative Semantics
The present thesis attempts to develop a model of narrative reference that shows the organisation of meaning in narrative to be equivalent to logical structure of space and time. In doing this, the thesis proceeds by developing a logical model of worldhood and showing that this model can be construed in spatiotemporal terms as an elementary space-time manifold. Following on from this, the thesis then makes an exploration of the characteristic features of narrative discourse with a view to showing how these features exemplify the logical structure of worldhood. Once this has been established, the thesis then demonstrates that the cognitive strategies that the subject uses to apply narrative representations to real-world scenarios have the form of a homomorphic mapping, which subordinates the continuous data of real-world experience to the discrete categories of a narratively mediated world model. The final step in the exposition of the model then comes with demonstrating its utility in the analysis of actual texts. This is achieved by applying the derived model to Hesiod{u2019}s Homeric Hymn to Demeter and Mary Shelley{u2019}s The Last Man. Taken together, what all of these steps result in is the development of a comprehensive account of narrative that integrates the semio-linguistic structures of narrative discourse with the existential fact of human immundation in space and time.

Database Semantics: Semantic Issues in Multimedia Systems reflects the state of the art of emerging research on the meaning of multimedia information, as presented during IFIP's Eighth Data Semantics Working Conference (DS-8), organized by its Working Group 2.6 on Databases, and held at Rotorua, New Zealand, in January 1999. DS-8 was planned as an active forum for researchers and practitioners focusing on those issues that involve the semantics of the information represented, stored, and manipulated by multimedia systems. Depending on the topic and state of research, issues may be covered either deeply theoretically or quite practically, or even both. Three visionary keynote addresses, by famous experts Ramesh Jain, Hermann Maurer and Masao Sakauchi, set the stage for discussion and future directions for the field. The collection of papers that resulted now offers a glimpse of the excitement and enthusiasm from DS-8. Narrative Worlds and the Texture of Time
This book brings together a model of time and a model of language to generate a new model of narrative, where different stories with different temporalities and non-chronological modes of sequence can tell of different worlds of human – and non-human – experience, woven together (the ‘texture of time’) in the one narrative. The work of Gerald Edelman on consciousness, J.T. Fraser on time, and M.A.K. Halliday on language is introduced; the categories of systemic functional linguistics are used for detailed analysis of English narrative texts from different literary periods. A summary chapter gives an overview of previous narrative studies and theories, with extensive references. Chapters on ‘temporalization’ and ‘spatialization’ of language contrast the importance of time in narrative texts with the effect of ‘grammatical metaphor’, as described by M.A.K.
