As social and symbolic animals—animals with language and systems of signs—humans are informed by two different kinds of heritage, one biological, the other cultural. Scholars have tended to study our genetic and symbolic lineages separately, but in recent years some have begun to explore them together, offering a “dual inheritance theory.” In this book, Robert A. Paul offers an entirely new and original consideration of our dual inheritance to date, going deep inside an extensive ethnographic record to outline a fascinating relationship between our genetic codes and symbolic systems. Examining a wide array of cultures, Paul reveals how the inherent tensions between these two modes of transmission generate many of the features of human society, such as marriage rules, initiation rituals, gender asymmetry, and sexual symbolism. Exploring differences in the requirements, range, and agendas of genetic and symbolic reproduction, he shows that a properly conceived dual inheritance model does a better job of accounting for the distinctive character of actual human societies than either evolutionary or socio-cultural construction theories can do alone. Ultimately this book offers a powerful call for a synthesis of the traditions inspired by Darwin, Durkheim, and Freud—one that is critically necessary if we are to advance our understanding of human social life.

Let us not assign a value to a journey based solely on how long it took to get to our destination. Looking back upon this extraordinary experience... I have few regrets. And those would be the times when I concealed and repressed my observations and true feelings out of fear of losing a most precious person. In reflection...these have been the most creative two years ever. I was awakened to my calling again (acting and writing) and my health certainly is an example of the path I chose to follow. I wish for each of you to find the courage to go beyond your "comfort zone." Oh yes, we'll meet again and share our adventures with all that includes. And connected to the best that has been given to me by God, I feel exhilarated by all that took place and most importantly...I still believe in the Power of LOVE...
Mixed Messages: Using the Bible and Qur'ān in Swahili Tracts
The present volume sets Swahili religious tracts available in Kenya and Tanzania in their context. The book starts with an overview of tracts in Swahili from the 19th century to the present day, an examination of Swahili as a religious language, and an introduction to Swahili versions of the Bible and Qurʾān. Chesworth then introduces the range of tracts currently available, examining eight in detail. In particular he considers how they present scripture in order to promote their own faith, Islam or Christianity, whilst denigrating the ‘other’. Finally, the volume discusses the impact from modern media on these tracts.
