Minerals and Allied Natural Resources and their Sustainable Development

Nonrenewable natural resources – metallic and non-metallic minerals, industrial rocks and energy resources (both organic and inorganic), have been treated in a holistic manner in this book, including two important resources (soil and water), not commonly covered in most books on this topic. For the uninitiated reader, an introductory chapter looks into some basic definitions as well as nature and characteristics of mineral deposits followed by a chapter on the different crustal processes that produce the various ore deposits in the endogenous and exogenous environments. The strength of the book lies in its critical treatment of the genetic processes of the mineral deposits, their classification and the geodynamic context of metallogeny, and coverage of sustainable development of mineral deposits with special reference to various socio-economic as well as regulatory and environmental issues that face the Indian mining industry today. The text is punctuated with examples of Indian deposits, balanced with classical deposits around the world, to cater to the interests of Indian students and the international readership. This is a book for advanced undergraduate and post-graduate students of Geology, Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management.

Minerals are essential commodities for the growth of mankind, and all the progress of humanity owes unequivocally to minerals. However, winning minerals through mining has always been cursed, and mankind has paid a heavy price for mining in the form of great loss of flora and fauna and unprecedented impact on the environment. Notwithstanding any arguments either in favor or against, one cannot deny that for the progression, advancement, and security of nations mining is indispensable, compulsory, and unavoidable trade. It is in the best interest of every stakeholder; a sustainable approach to mining must be adopted. Sustainability has many dimensions, two most important being: the optimum utilization of mined-out materials and creating value-added products from the mining wastes. Taking a cue from this, an international seminar was organized on “Prospects and Challenges of Mineral Based Products and Utilization of Wastes for the ‘Make in India’ Initiative” at Hotel Radisson Blu from 10–12 November 2022. The conference was attended by about 120 delegates from all over India. This book is a compilation of selected papers presented during the conference, broadly divided into the following groups: (a) rare earth elements, (b) ferrous minerals, (c) non-ferrous minerals, (d) industrial minerals, (e) waste utilization and valorization and (f) other significant contributions. Written by experts and edited by academicians and technocrats, this book promises to be a valuable and essential reading for professionals, researchers, as well as students.
Engineering Materials

The book is intended to cover the different types of materials used in modern engineering applications. The book begins with an introductory chapter on the basic concepts of materials science. Subsequently, it includes a detailed overview of metals, alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites, textiles, 2D/nanomaterials, and biomaterials, exploring their structure and properties, processing techniques, and characterization methods. Last chapter of the book is dedicated on materials sustainability including life cycle assessment and its role in sustainable materials design. The book examines the environmental impact of different materials and processing techniques and explores strategies for minimizing this impact. Overall, this book will prove to be an excellent resource for undergraduate students and professionals working in domain of materials and allied areas. To the best of our knowledge, no other book available in the market comprehensively explores the engineering materials to such a breadth.
