Buku ini membahas mengenai peranan media massa melalui tajuk rencana yang Ia miliki berkaitan dengan kasus korupsi, yang mengambil studi kasus harian Pedoman dalam mengungkap kasus korupsi pada masa awal Orde Baru dengan rentang waktu pada tahun 1969 sampai dengan tahun 1974. Harian pedoman sendiri adalah harian yang terbit pada dua masa periode, yakni pada masa Demokrasi Terpimpin dan Awal Orde Baru. Harian ini dipimpin oleh Rosihan Anwar dan merupakan salah satu harian yang terbit kembali pada masa awal Orde Baru, selain harian Indonesia Raya dan Nusantara. Untuk dapat membahas mengenai Pedoman pada masa awal Orde Baru atau periode kedua setelah dia terbit, maka diperlukan pembahasan mengenai perubahan situasi politik menjelang keruntuhan demokrasi terpimpin yang sempat membawa "euforia" bagi kebebasan pers pada masa awal Orde Baru sampai dengan titik balik yang involutif menjelang konsolidasi final kekuatan yang terjadi pada masa Orde Baru yang pada akhirnya menyebabkan pembredelan pers secara massal pada peristiwa Malari. Melalui simbiosis yang ada, yakni nalar Pedoman mengenai korupsi dalam tajuk rencana, sikap pemerintah Orde Baru pada saat itu, dan peristiwa Malari, kesemuanya merupakan satuan benang merah yang pada akhirnya menjadi pembentuk interpretasi dari situasi peristiwa yang ada di dalam sejarah tanah air.
