Things We Lost in the Fire

'A portrait of a world in fragments, a mirrorball made of razor blades' Guardian Thrilling and terrifying, Things We Lost in the Fire takes the reader into a world of sharp-toothed children and young girls racked by desire, where demons lurk beneath the river and stolen skulls litter the pavements. A world where the secrets half-buried under Argentina's terrible dictatorship rise up to haunt the present day, and where women, exhausted by a plague of violence, find that their only path out lies through the flames... 'The only book that's ever left me afraid to turn out the lights. Mercilessly incisive and deeply creepy' Lisa McInerney, author of The Glorious Heresies
The Lost World of Russia's Jews

Author: Abraham Rechtman

In 1913, Abraham Rechtman journeyed through the Russian Pale of Settlement on a mission to record its Jewish folk traditions before they disappeared forever. The Lost World of Russia's Jews is the first English translation of his extraordinary experiences, originally published in Yiddish, documenting a culture best known until now through romanticized works like Life Is with People and Fiddler on the Roof. In the last years of the Russian Empire, Abraham Rechtman joined S. An-sky's Jewish Ethnographic Expedition to explore and document daily life in the centuries old Jewish communities of the Pale of Settlement. Rechtman described the key places where Jewish life and death were experienced and connected these sites to local folklore and customary practices. Among the many unique contributions of his memoir are riveting descriptions of traditional Jewish healers and exorcists—many of them women—and their methods and incantations. Rather than a nostalgic portrait of an imagined shtetl, Rechtman succeeded in producing an intimate account of Jewish life and death that is highly nuanced and richly detailed. The Lost World of Russia's Jews powerfully illuminates traditional Jewish life in Eastern Europe on the eve of its transformation and, ultimately, destruction.
Troupe Of Consequences

In the early 1960’s, rock music was not just a form of entertainment. It was the force behind a major change in pop culture. It was the lubricant that greased the acts of rebellion and subversion against the staid culture of the 1950’s. Growing your hair long, smoking marijuana, and free love were the attractions that lured teens and twenties from across America to leave home and seek a life of freedom and bliss. Some, not most, rock songs , both in lyrics and presentation, suggested brazen, lewd behavior. Hence, rock music was not readily accepted by the over thirty population. Those who listened to rock music on the radio, watched music on TV, ie., American Bandstand, or went to live concerts, could find rock stars to fanaticize and cherish. Young musicians especially, sought this life of freedom and fame. “Troupe Of Consequences” is a story about one of the groups that traveled this pathway. Against the desires and hopes of the families they left behind, they dropped out of college and went on the road to seek the life of rock stars. Whether they were lured by freedom, fame, fortune, or by the devotion to their music, JC and Tony performed their way from a Dynamic Duo to a five-piece, professional road Troupe. Traveling in an old pickup truck, the two guys crossed paths with another aspiring duo, the Lee Sisters. Isabelle and Annabelle Lee were traveling the country performing classical concert music. That chance meeting presented JC and Tony with a challenge they had not anticipated. They also encountered a stowaway. She was a Jule of the most precious kind. Prominent cultural themes of this turbulent era were intertwined with their achievements and adversities. When they met an extremely talented young black man from the South, they had to face their own bias in deciding to accept him on their team. Their story is intriguing, exciting, entertaining, and not so unlike the sagas of the superstars they covered. Grab your favorite libation, sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the best rock, pop, and country music with the “Troupe Of Consequences”. So, “Think About Living”, “Don’t Be Singing The Blues”, “It’s Quarter To Three”, let “Johnny Be Good”, slide on your “Black Denim Trousers”, put on your “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Let The Good Times Roll”, “Jump, Jive and Wail”, “Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay “, It’s Now Or Never”, and “Save The Last Dance For Me.”
