Dalam pertempuran dengan askar Jepun, Askar Melayu menunjukkan keberanian dan semangat keperwiraan yang hebat di mana seramai 152 anggota Askar Melayu, termasuk 7 pegawai Melayu dan 6 orang pegawai British yang dipinjamkan ke Rejimen Askar Melayu terkorban. Antara pegawai Askar Melayu yang terkorban itu adalah Leftenan Adnan bin Saidi. Dia bersama 42 orang anggotanya berjuang sehingga ke titisan darah yang terakhir. Novel Leftenan Adnan Wira Bangsa, karya penulis novel sejarah prolifik Abdul Latip Talib, memaparkan kisah serangan terakhir askar Jepun di Singapura serta keberanian dan keperwiraan askar Melayu yang sanggup berjuang sehingga ke hujung nyawa.

Multiple memories of a multicultural nation challenge the idea of a singular national identity and call for multiple forms of belonging. Memory and Nation-Building explores the contemporary images of World War II in Malaysian literature and the continuing significance of the conflict in the collective memory and nation-building in Malaysia. Given the multicultural nature of the nation, the War memories of Malaysia are multiple and often contradictory. In the contemporary Malaysian literature, these memories embody the search for a historical narrative that would accommodate the cultural and ethnic diversity of the country.
