Zu Begriff und Konzepten Öffentlicher Theologie gibt es einen verzweigten internationalen Diskurs. Die Debatte im deutschen Sprachraum kreist derzeit um die Programmbegriffe "Öffentliche Theologie", "Öffentlicher Protestantismus" und "Öffentliche Kirche". Der vorliegende Band bringt die genannten Theorien miteinander ins Gespräch mit dem Ziel, möglichen Engführungen in der Debatte entgegenwirken und offene Fragen zu benennen. Neben den theoretischen Grundlagen im ersten Hauptteil des Bandes liegt im zweiten Hauptteil der Fokus auf der Bedeutung des Diskurses über Öffentliche Theologie für die Diakonie, die gleichermaßen als Akteurin wie als Lernort Öffentlicher Theologie, somit aber auch als eine Gestalt von Öffentlicher Kirche und Öffentlichem Protestantismus zu begreifen ist. Ein dritter Themenblock ist materialdogmatischen und materialethischen Themen Öffentlicher Theologie gewidmet. In German-speaking areas, the debate currently revolves around the programmatic terms, "Public Theology", "Public Protestantism" and "Public Church". The present volume brings the aforementioned theories into conversation with each other with the goals of counteracting possible reductionisms in the debate, as well as naming open questions. Besides the theoretical bases treated in the volume's first main part, the second main part focusses on the significance of discourse about Public Theology for Protestant social welfare organization [Diaconia/Diakonie], which is both an agent and a learning environment of public theology – and as a consequence, is also to be understood as a form of Public Church and Public Protestantism. A third topical unit is dedicated to material-dogmatic and material-ethical topics of Public Theology.

Space and Place as a Topic for Public Theologies
Public theologies reflect on the contextuality of the Christian religion. Much of this contextuality is dependent on place: place as the culture and the society in which religions are situated, place as the position from where a theologian speaks, place as the biographical contingencies that shape people's lives. Moreover, public theologies ask for the contribution of Christian ethics to society, thereby shaping the social, cultural, and religious space to which they belong. The contributions in this volume analyse the categories of space and place in order to deepen the understanding of contextuality, thereby taking up some of the challenges presented by the so-called "spatial turn". Dr Thomas Wabel is Professor of Protestant Theology (Systematic Theology) at the University of Bamberg. Dr Katharina Eberlein-Braun is Assistant Professor of Protestant Theology (Systematic Theology) at the University of Bamberg.
