महाभारत को एक महान महाकाव्य के रूप में चित्रित किया जाता रहा है I परंतु जहाँ एक ओर जय पांडवों की कथा है, जो कुरुक्षेत्र के विजेताओं के दृष्टिकोण को ध्यान में रखते हुए प्रस्तुत की गई हैं, जो कुरुक्षेत्र के विजेताओं के दृष्टिकोण को ध्यान में रखते हुए प्रस्तुत की गई है; वही अजेय उन कौरवों की गाथा है, जिनका लगभग समूल नाश कर दिया गया I कलि के अंधकारमयी युग का उदय हो रहा है और प्रत्येक स्त्री व् पुरुष को कर्त्तव्य और अंतःकरण, प्रतिष्ठा और लज्जा, जीवन और मृत्यु के बीच चुनाव करना होगा... पांडव: जिन्हें जुए के विनाशकारी खेल के बाद वन के लिए निष्कासित किया गया था, हस्तिनापुर वापस आते हैं I द्रौपदी: जिसने प्रतिज्ञा ली है कि कुरुओं के रक्त से सिंचित किए बिना अपने बाल नहीं बाँधेगी I कर्ण : जिसे निष्ठा और आभार, तथा गुरु और मित्र के बीच चुनाव करना होगा I अश्वत्थामा: जो एक दृष्टि के संधान के लिए गांधार के पर्वतों की और एक घातक अभियान पर निकलता है I कुंती: जिन्हें अपनी पहली संतान तथा अन्य पुत्रों के बीच चुनाव करना होगा I गुरु द्रोण: जिन्हें किसी एक का साथ देना होगा - उनका प्रिय शिष्य अथवा उनका पुत्र I बलराम: जो अपने भाई को हिंसा के अधर्म के विषय में नहीं समझ पाते, वे शांति का संदेश प्रचारित करने भारतवर्ष की सड़कों पर निकल पड़ते हैं I एकलव्य: जिसे एक स्त्री के मान की रक्षा के लिए अपनी बलि देनी पड़ी I जरा : वह भिक्षुक जो कृष्णा की भक्ति में मग्न होकर गीत गाता रहता है और उसका नेत्रहीन श्वान 'धर्म' उसके पीछे चलता है I शकुनि : वह धूर्त जो भारत को विनष्ट करने के स्वप्न को लगभग साकार होते हुए देखता है I जब पांडव हस्तिनापुर के राज सिंहासन पर अपना दावा प्रस्तुत करते हैं, तो कौरवों का युवराज सुयोधन कृष्ण को चुनौती देने के लिए प्रस्तुत हो जाता है I जहाँ महापुरुष धर्म और अधर्म के विचार पर तर्क-वितर्क करते हैं, वहीँ सत्ता के भूखे मनुष्य एक विनाशकारी युद्ध की तैयारी करते हैं I उच्च वंश में जन्मी कुलीन स्त्रियाँ किसी अनिष्ट के पूर्वाभास के साथ अपने सम्मुख विनाश की लीला देख रही हैं I लोभी व्यापारी तथा विवेकहीन पंडे-पुरोहित गिद्धों की भाँति प्रतीक्षारत हैं I दोनों ही पक्ष जानते हैं कि इस सारे दुःख तथा विनाश के पश्चात् सब कुछ विजेता का होगा I परंतु जब देवता षड़यंत्र रचते हैं और मनुष्यों की नियति बनती है, तो एक महान सत्य प्रत्यक्ष होता है I
