Intelligent environments (IE) combine physical spaces with ICT and pervasive technology to improve a user’s awareness of their surroundings, empower them to carry out tasks, enrich their experience, and enhance their ability to manage such environments. A growing community, from academia to practitioners, is working to bring intelligent environments to life. This work is driven by the innovative ideas and technological progress that are making the sensors and computing devices required for intelligent environments more affordable and energy-efficient. This book presents papers from Workshops held during the 17th International Conference on Intelligent Environments, IE2021. The conference was due to take place in Dubai, UAE, but was held as a virtual event from 21 to 24 June 2021 due to the restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic. Included here are the proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE’21), the 3rd International Workshop on Intelligent Environments and Buildings (IEB’21), the 1st International Workshop on Self-Learning in Intelligent Environments (SeLIE’21), and the 1st International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Emerging Topics (ALLEGET’21). The contributions to these workshops reflect the multi-disciplinary and transversal aspects of intelligent environments, and cover the latest research and development in intelligent environments and related areas, focusing on pushing the boundaries and contributing to the establishment of intelligent environments in the real world. Offering a state-of-the-art overview of current progress, the book will be of particular interest to all those working in the field of intelligent environments.
Intelligent Environments
The promises and realities of digital innovation have come to suffuse everything from city regions to astronomy, government to finance, art to medicine, politics to warfare, and from genetics to reality itself. Digital systems augmenting physical space, buildings, and communities occupy a special place in the evolutionary discourse about advanced technology. The two Intelligent Environments books edited by Peter Droege span a quarter of a century across this genre. The second volume, Intelligent Environments: Advanced Systems for a Healthy Planet, asks: how does civilization approach thinking systems, intelligent spatial models, design methods, and support structures designed for sustainability, in ways that could counteract challenges to terrestrial habitability? This book examines a range of baseline and benchmark practices but also unusual and even sublime endeavors across regions, currencies, infrastructure, architecture, transactive electricity, geodesign, net-positive planning, remote work, integrated transport, and artificial intelligence in understanding the most immediate spatial setting: the human body. Workshop Proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE2023)
The term ‘intelligent environment’ (IE) refers to a physical space that is enhanced by digital technologies. Such environments are designed to improve the quality of life of the people who live or work in them, and are equipped with technologies such as sensing systems and artificial intelligence which can detect changes in the environment, anticipate user requirements, and provide personalized services and experiences to users. This book presents presents papers from Workshops held during the first two days of IE2023, the 19th International Conference on Intelligent Environments, held in Mauritius between 27 and 30 June 2023, with an online participation available for those who could not travel to the island. The papers are grouped under the headings of the various workshops: the 12th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE’23); the 3rd International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Emerging Topics (ALLEGET’23); the 3rd International Workshop on Self-Learning in Intelligent Environments (SeLIE’23); the 2nd International Workshop on Edge AI for Smart Agriculture (EAISA’23); and the 12th International Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Healthcare and Well-being (WISHWell’2023), and represent a diverse array of cutting-edge research reflective of this exciting area of study. The book offers an overview of the latest and most exciting developments in intelligent-environments research, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.
