The popularity of LED TV has increased from 9% in 2012 to 60% in 2019 in the U.S. TV market. Unlike traditional TVs, the power demand of LED TVs is determined by the display brightness. So, the variation of LED TV displays brightness causes power demand to change constantly. In power systems, the power supply (generation) should always match the power demand (load) to maintain a stable frequency. Any imbalance between generation and load will lead to frequency deviation, which will affect the frequency stability of the power grids. A significant imbalance between generation and load in a short time might cause frequency collapse and trigger power grids failure and blackout. Considering the high penetration of LED TVs, large power demand change could result from societal TV events such as NFL Super Bowls or celebrities’ momentous events. Therefore, power system frequency stability could be jeopardized by the imbalance between power supply and power demand. In this thesis, we studied the impact of societal events on frequency stability caused by the large viewership of LED TVs. To conduct the research, power demand data of a 55-inch LED TV is collected and analyzed. We measured the brightness of the LED TV display for different events and calculated the total power demand and power deviation. The case study was performed using current parameters from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. This research shows that growing LED TVs will bring significant impacts on power systems stability and reliability. To ensure reliable and stable operation of the power grids, power systems operators should plan for adequate and flexible power generation reserve to mitigate the impacts of LED TVs on power systems.
