Immigrant Christianities
Over the past two decades, Romanian immigration to the Italian Peninsula has grown to nearly a quarter of the country’s foreign population, making it the largest Romanian diaspora in the world. This volume is the first to examine the religious dimension of this vast migratory phenomenon from multiple perspectives, including sociology, anthropology, ethnology, history, and theology. The chapters study the patterns and transformations of Romanian Churches and Christian movements in Italy, with particular attention to the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian Roman Catholic Church, the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church, and the Romanian Pentecostal Church. They also analyze how these immigrant Churches and religious movements engage with Italian society and respond to contemporary challenges. Drawing on the study of the Romanian diaspora and grounded in a multidisciplinary perspective, this volume develops the notion of immigrant Christianities. The latter provides a heuristic framework for highlighting the growing entanglements and transformative dynamics shaping the multiplicity of immigrant Churches and Christian movements in the contemporary world.

In Christianity and Conversion among Migrants, Darren Carlson explores the faith, beliefs, and practices of migrants and refugees as well as the Christian organizations serving them between 2014–2018 in Athens, Greece. This is the first major study of migrant faith communities and refugee centers conducted in Athens. The study traces the travel stories of participants as they leave their home countries and migrate to Athens. Darren Carlson discusses the ways evangelical and Pentecostal Christians served migrants along their journey, how churches and specific refugee centers served and proclaimed the gospel, and the impact Christian witness had on migrants, particularly Muslims, who were converting to evangelical Christian faith.

This book migrates through continents, regions, nations, and villages, in order to tell the stories of diverse kinds of nomadic dwellers. It departs from Africa, en routes itself toward Asia, Oceania, Europe, and culminates in the Americas, with the territories of Latin America, Canada, and the United States. The volume travels through worn out pathways of migration that continue to be threaded upon today, and theologically reflects on a wide range of migratory aims that result also in diverse forms of indigenization of Christianity. Among the main issues being considered are: How have globalization and migration affected the theological self-understanding of Christianity? In light of globalization and migration, how is the evangelizing mission of Christianity to be understood and carried out? What ecclesiastical reforms if any are required to enable the church to meet present-day challenges?
