Human-oriented Design of Advanced Robotics Systems (DARS'95)

The first IFAC Workshop on Human-Oriented Design of Advanced Robotics Systems (DARS '95) was organized and held in Austria in 1995 because new approaches for advanced robotics systems are expected to be applied in industrial production and other areas in the near future and new ergonomic, social and cultural aspects must be considered if employees are to work with these systems. The workshop provided a forum for researchers to discuss and overview these aspects. This postprint volume contains 33 of the 34 papers presented at the workshop and deals with: bull; system design, especially of man-machine interface, for autonomous, semi-autonomous and tele-operated mode and for tele-existence bull; organizational and social aspects with respect to the environment in which the system is embedded bull; cultural aspects due to different living and working traditions and conditions of the people involved bull; economical aspects
Mobile Robotics in Healthcare

The text presents the conclusions of four years joint work of 12 European laboratories on mobile robotics technology for healthcare services. The book bridges the human factors and the demands of real-life applications to the achievements of the robotics technology. It is organize d in 15 chapters analyzing topics covering all the related fields and including but not limited to: user - application requirements, human machine interfacing, mobile robots' and mobile manipulators' control architectures, navigation and sensing strategies, and robot - smart building interconnection. It also provides technical details and hints to the reader on how to address real-life problems. The book also performs a historical review and includes an overview of the contemporary developments worldwide.

The concept of Assistive Technology is moving away from adopting the most appropriate devices to overcome the limitations of users, to the designing and setting up of total environments in which people can live, supported by suitable services and additional support devices integrated within the environment. These two perspectives are deeply intertwined, both from technological and social points of view, and the relationship between them currently represent the primary challenge for the field of Assistive Technology. This publication covers the proceedings of the 10th European Conference of the Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe (http://www.aaate.net), the organisation which stimulates the advancement of assistive technology for the benefit of people with disabilities, including elderly people. This conference seeks to bridge the gap between these two complementary approaches, providing an opportunity to clarify differences and common points, and better define future direction. Topics covered by the conference include: technological innovation in assistive technology; the need for multidisciplinary approaches; equipment interconnectivity and compatibility; cultural aspects and the acceptance of different approaches; and the role of Europe in building inclusion competence worldwide. Disability results not only from a person’s intrinsic attributes but also from the context in which they live. This publication is a significant contribution to the advancement of inclusion for people living with a disability everywhere.
