Did you know that God sings? There are many things God does that you may not have thought about ever before—and the more we know, the better we can respond to Him. God sees. God winks. God hears. He cries, He waits and He runs. He is jealous and gets angry. He smiles, frowns and laughs! Reflecting on the attributes and activities of God is the best way to become like Him. In God Laughs, Elmer Towns and Charles Billingsley invite the reader to deeply consider God’s character and qualities. They contend that it’s only as we get to know Him that we can become more like Him, and it’s only when we glimpse God for who He is that we can worship Him in Spirit and in truth. Readers are challenged to dig deeply into Scripture, where God reveals that He has a heart . . . and a nose . . . and that He whistles!

My goal in writing is to share with readers passages in Scripture that I find amusing. I will tell or retell these stories with the hope of demonstrating their humour and practical ‘life lessons’ that can be drawn from them. We find things humorous which we recognize as common experiences or foibles. The biblical characters stand in for us at our most foolish. We are amused because we see our common humanity and we smile at the things which are not funny when pointed out in ourselves. I trust that you will laugh, along with me, but also that we can learn, grow, and even repent together as the ‘funny’ becomes a mirror into our own lives.

Most Jews will feel intimately familiar with and attached to the figure of the ‘Jewish mother’, yet few have questioned representations of mothers and motherhood in Jewish culture. This volume aims to fill this gap by bringing to the fore the vast network of symbols and images which Jews have associated with mothers from the Bible to the modern period. It demonstrates the complex ways in which the Jewish mother has been used to construct and frame Jewish religion and culture.
