Dear readers of Frontiers in Built Environment, As the Field Chief Editor for Frontiers in Built Environment, I am happy to present this curated selection of papers that have made a significant impact within our community. Among the large number of submissions that we received, these 14 papers represent some of the best published in 2023, the year when the journal attained its first impact factor. With many high-quality papers to consider, in selecting these 14 articles we faced the challenging task of how to include papers from across the 15 distinct sections of the journal whilst at the same time achieving a sense of cohesion to the ebook overall. However, amidst this diversity, we noticed a convergence in our highest-quality papers around three pivotal themes that are central to our journal’s mission: resilience, sustainability, and technology. In this way, despite the broad range of topics covered within both our journal and this selection, this ebook can truly be considered representative of our journal as a whole. These carefully chosen papers encompass high-quality original research and comprehensive reviews, which also embody the ethos of innovation and excellence that defines our journal. As the Field Chief Editor, I am thankful to all authors who have enriched our journal with their high-caliber work. I extend sincere appreciation to the dedicated efforts of our editors and reviewers, whose invaluable contributions have been instrumental in shaping Frontiers in Built Environment in 2023.

Post-Carbon Futures: Imagining (and Enacting) New Worlds through Transition Studies explores the multitude of possibilities for conceiving and creating fulfilling post-carbon ways of life. Offering diverse perspectives and abundant empirical examples, this robust volume sheds new light on how complex ecological, economic, and political factors contour processes of conscious cultural change. The works gathered here center contributors’ experiences and observations of life in an era of profound uncertainty. Bringing together theoretically informed considerations, ethnographic examples, and viewpoints from active transition movement participants, this book is certain to catalyze rich discussions about transition’s myriad opportunities and its broad significance for socio-ecological change research. Fifteen original chapters highlight distinctive circumstances of post-carbon transitions as they play out in diverse communities around the world. These contributions are framed by a foreword by Arturo Escobar, a comprehensive introductory overview by the editors, and a dialogical conclusion that captures contributing authors’ key reflections on Transition Studies as an emergent field of knowledge production. Post-Carbon Futures: Imagining (and Enacting) New Worlds through Transition Studies will inspire readers to contemplate how transition intersects with their own academic and/or activist interests and generate exciting new understandings of conscious cultural change in the twenty-first century.

A courageous story about a mother in crisis from one of Norway's most exciting writers, for readers of Boulder and Detransition, Baby Silje Marie has been keeping a secret from her wife. She loves one of her sons more than the other. In their sleepy suburb of Oslo, she's given Henry and Olav the childhood she never had: organic cotton clothing, a house by the forest, apple pies baked with Grandma on summer afternoons. But when Silje Marie stays behind to clear the house for an upcoming renovation, buried thoughts resurface. She is haunted by the sense that only one of her children truly feels like her own-an admission that would destroy her wife, Helene. Worse still, there is the other mother. A woman befriended in secret, whose son's resemblance to Henry is impossible to ignore. Spiky, daring and feverishly intense, this is a story about the complex confinement and joy of family life, and a mother drawn towards dismantling the home she has fought so hard to build. 'Raises impressive ruminations on the nature of this ownership we call love' Kenan Orhan, author of The Renovation 'Brave, well-written, distinctive' Morgenbladet 'Exceptionally powerful' Vårt Land'Digs deep into the gnarly emotions hidden behind domesticity' Szilvia Molnar, author of The Nursery
