This book, based upon a series of psychological research studies, examines Sierra Leone as a case study of a constructivist and narrative perspective on psychological responses to warfare, telling the stories of a range of survivors of the civil war. The authors explore previous research on psychological responses to warfare while providing background information on the Sierra Leone civil war and its context. Chapters consider particular groups of survivors, including former child soldiers, as well as amputee footballers, mental health service users and providers, and refugees. Implications of the themes emerging from this research are considered with respect to how new understandings can inform current models of trauma and work with its survivors. Amongst the issues concerned will be post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic growth; resilience; mental health service provision; perpetration of atrocities; and forgiveness. The book also provides a critical consideration of the appropriateness of the use of Western concepts and methods in an African context. Drawing upon psychological theory and rich narrative research, Trauma, Survival and Resilience in War Zones will appeal to researchers and academics in the field of clinical psychology, as well as those studying post-war conflict zones.

"The scope of this book is daunting, ranging from madness in the ancient Greco-Roman world, to Christianized concepts of medieval folly, through the writings of early modern authors such as Shakespeare, Cervantes, and Descartes, and on to German Romantic philosophy, fin de siecle French poetry, and Freud . . . Artaud, Duras, and Plath."-Isis"This provocative and closely argued work will reward many readers."-ChoiceIn Revels in Madness, Allen Thiher surveys a remarkable range of writers as he shows how conceptions of madness in literature have reflected the cultural assumptions of their era, and emphasizes the transition from classical to modern theories of madness-a transition that began at the end of the Enlightenment and culminates in recent women's writing that challenges the postmodern understanding of madness as a fall from language or as a dysfunction of culture.

Seek the seeker instead of enlightenment. Once you find the seeker, enlightenment is already there. This book isn't about enlightenment, but about you, the seeker. To Kiran Baba when people come to India seeking a spiritual life, or enlightenment, as it is better known among seekers, they come with many misunderstandings and misconceptions about life itself. These misunderstandings and misconceptions if not properly understood can lead people to much more misunderstandings and confusion, and even make them prone to get easily caught in what Kiran Baba calls “The Holy Business,” which seems to be an increasing factor in India, due to the number of foreigners who are heading to the Country every year in search of spiritual guidance. In his discourses Kiran Baba shares with his friends - the seekers - his understanding about life; how it naturally functions. He speaks about the many misunderstandings that one has while entering into the spiritual life. He warn us about the so many games we can fall for in name of enlightenment. He clarifies the most important concepts related to the nature of the mind and the ego, how they function and how they are naturally required by life. He invite us to have our own understanding about what we believe we are missing in our lives and start realizing each of us as an unique divine creation. And if you are available, his discourses can also give you some clues where you can connect to life again, but this time having your own understanding that it is possible to relax and celebrate life in whatever situation it is bringing to you. You will understand that life cannot be a misery; life cannot be suffering. Life when deeply understood is just a play and it is absolutely beautiful.
