The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into sharp focus the need for the collection of data. Such data cannot be collected or provided without medical informatics, documentation and health data management. Nor can health data be evaluated and converted into a useful tool for making the important decisions that affect us all without biometrics and epidemiology, bioinformatics and systems biology. This book presents full papers from GMDS & CEN-IBS 2020, the first joint online conference of the German Association of Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) and the Central European Network & the International Biometric Society (CEN-IBS), held online between 6 and 11 September 2020. The title of the conference was Bringing Data to Life, a reference to the increasing amount of data in medical research which is inextricably related to the fast-developing digitalization of the health system. Many challenges must be addressed in order to make use of and benefit from these increasing sources of data, and these can only be faced if all disciplines related to data science work together. The conference aimed to bring together the diverse disciplines within data science, including medical informatics, bioinformatics, biostatistics, epidemiology, public health and medical documentation. Topics covered in the book include central themes relevant to society in general and advances in data technology which support innovations in medical research in particular. The book brings together many topics related to the provision and analysis of data in medicine, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Digitization offers great potential – especially in medicine. Cross-domain and cross-institutional linkage, big data, artificial intelligence and robotics can all help to improve research and care, but they also pose new challenges to all those involved. This book presents the joint proceedings of the GMDS (German Medical Data Sciences) and TMF (its Technology, Methodology and Infrastructure platform), held entirely online from 26 – 30 September 2021 as a result of restrictions due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This joint event addresses the opportunities and risks of using new information technologies in medicine, as well as the resulting requirements for data protection, data security and ethics. Methodological challenges associated with the preparation, evaluation and interpretation of data volumes which constantly increase in type and scope in the course of digitization are also examined in detail. The 25 papers included here are divided into 5 sections: editorials; artificial intelligence and clinical decision support systems (CDSS); data integration and interoperability; human computer interaction; and software systems and frameworks, and the topics covered are very diverse, ranging from disease detection using retinal imaging, through data management and sharing, to interactive web applications. The Covid-19 pandemic affected the daily lives of all of us on many levels. Epidemiology suddenly became a personal matter and general interest in many aspects of medical data science became much more widespread. And physical distance became the new normal. This book presents the full paper part of the proceedings of GMDS 2023, the 68th annual meeting of the German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology, held from 17 to 21 September 2023 in Heilbronn, Germany. The theme of the conference was, Science. Close to People, a particularly appropriate theme for the first of these annual conferences to be held face-to-face since 2019. A total of 227 scientific contributions were submitted to GMDS 2023, including 41 full papers for this volume in Studies in HTI. Of these, 30 papers are included here, following a rigorous two-stage review process, which represents an acceptance rate of 73%. The 30 papers in this book are grouped under 8 headings: FAIRification; research software engineering for research infrastructure & study data management; human factors; data quality; clinical decision support & artificial intelligence; evaluation of healthcare IT; biosignals; and interoperability. Providing a broad overview of current developments in the disciplines of medical informatics, biometry and epidemiology, the book will be of interest to all those working in these fields.
