Experimental Characterization of Bend and Microbend Losses in Singlemode Fibers
Bend and microbend performance of various singlemode optical fibers with matched cladding are investigated. Microbending sensitivity is determined with both a sandpaper test and a new test that uses wire mesh. The new test is found to have certain advantages. In particular, the mesh test can be carried out on bare fibers; therefore the intrinsic sensitivity of fibers to microbending can be characterized directly, without concern about the influence of coatings. Such bare fiber results are also reported. (Author).
